This upbeat picture book has great read-aloud potential for responsive listening and extended play in storytimes. I thought that after the surprises of the first reading had been discovered, my kids might lose interest in the book, but my three year old has been chanting the words, in a sing-song voice, 'monkey and me, monkey and me,' and asking to read it over and over. The simple but repetitive language encourages speech development and it is quiet poetic if you ask me. I would read the book and and students would guess what animal monkey and the girl are going to see next.

the spare, expressive pencil drawings are charming, and the restrained use of watercolor washes heightens their effectiveness. It's nice because you have the beat along with the good story to keep the storytime group entertained and focused. I would reconmend this book to small children in the more emergent stages of reading because it offers many characteristics which are important for this stage (such as rhyme and rhythm).

I bought this for a trip to the states - to keep our 22 month old entertained on the flight as he loves monkeys. The artwork and storyline follow the companionship between a girl and her toy monkey as they are off to see different animals. It noted that even though the girl and her monkey fall asleep at the end, “the game has not ended: a real monkey watches them, a huge and contagious grin on his face.I bought this for my 2 year old daughter and 1 year old son thinking the repetitiveness of it would hold their attention and keep them entertained, however it didnt work out that way as they both get bored with hearing the same words over and over again, even though the animal pages are fun and a surprise its the pages in between that just dont keep their attention.

In Monkey and Me, there is not a lot of repetitive sounds, but there is a lot of guessing what is to come on the next page. Because , even when the book is not in sight my children have both repeated the rhythmic and repetitive story to me - it's pretty amazing to hear this from such young children. Soon everyone will be waddling like a penguin, jumping like a kangaroo and hanging upside down like a bat! I did like the illustrations and thought the animals shown, as well as the little girl, were adorable.It continues with the two going through adventures to see a number of different animals such as Penguins, Kangaroos, Bats, Elephants , and Monkeys. I love the use of play that the child uses in pretending to be like the animals they are going to see.
