About this deal

One fascinating thing about Billionaire Boy is the OCD emphasis on food, especially comfort food. Food rules Walliams’s world, arranging weddings, reconciling friends, and creating social bonds. The importance of food in children’s books has been explored thoroughly by children’s literature critics, and we find in Walliams’s novel a perfect example of a bulimic approach to chocolate and candy as the satisfaction of immediate, primitive desires in children – an easy and potent way to entrance the child reader by appealing to one of the most pressing cravings in a child’s life. Joe Spud: The main character in the story. He is the son of a multi-billionaire. His best friend is Bob and his love interest is Lauren, who is revealed to be an actress. Joe is twelve years old at the beginning of the book. He was bullied at his last school because his father made his fortune by making loo rolls, he is very socially awkward. There is always some kind of a message behind the book, specially that they are directed toward younger readers, this book's main idea that money can not buy you anything, specially friends and happiness. But this was over-repeated here that it became kinda annoying. Set up a new timetable for Joe at St. Cuthbert’s School for Boys, showing how long each lesson lasts. Could you use this to make up some word problems?

My niece has been telling me to read some David Walliams books for a while now (she can be quite forceful for a ten-year-old). I was initially reluctant as, I have to admit, I’m not really a fan of Walliams’ television work. The Grubbs: The Grubbs are twins who are the school bullies. One of them is Dave and another is Sue, even though they have all the same features. Their parents can't tell them apart and they are sent to a boot camp in America for juvenile delinquents. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a million pounds? Or a billion? How about a trillion? Or even a gazillion? Meet Joe Spud. In Chapters 13 and 17, Joe isn’t very nice when Bob tries to make friends again. Talk about other ways that he could have dealt with the situation. It is a fun book and I'd never consider not letting any child read it, but I will say this is probably the weakest story that I've read. I can really only compare Walliams' to Roald Dahl (which, less face it, is no competition at all) so in those terms Billionaire Boy falls terribly short. You are required to keep distance from other audience members and the venue's staff while inside this venue

Billionaire Boy sees young Joe Spud-a billionaire-wanting to move to a "normal", non-posh school because he is terribly bullied and has no friends. But there's a catch: no-one can know that he is in fact a squillionaire thanks to his father's wet-n-dry toilet paper invention. Boys at St. Cuthbert’s School for Boys have to wear an Elizabethan ruff. Find out what this is and learn about other types of Elizabethan costume. Lauren: An actress. Mr Spud has paid Lauren to be Joe's girlfriend. She stars in the Pot Noodle advert. She is 13 years old and has a boyfriend whose name is not mentioned. She is Joe's love interest and is remarkably pretty. Watch this reading and interview with the author. Think of questions that you would like to ask David Walliams: Voor Lara, Ik hou meer van je, dan ik met woorden kan zeggen There is video content at this location that is not currently supported for your device. Read Chapter 1 and look at the prices of some of the things that Joe has. How much are these items worth? Could you make some word problems which include the items and their values? Raj: Raj is a very kind shopkeeper who is on occasion rather bizarre and sells newspapers, magazines and chocolates .

From the award-winning West End producers of Gangsta Granny and Awful Auntie comes this amazing new production of David Walliams' best-selling story! Raj explains that Joe’s dad is ‘an inspiration to all of us’. Discuss what is meant by inspiration and talk about who inspires you.
