About this deal

The best telescopic pole hedge trimmers have a head that can be set at multiple angles. This should make trimming the tops and undersides of hedges easier. Depending on the look you’re after, you can adjust the blade angle depending on the shape you want. There’s no question in my mind. If you buy any of the products reviewed here you’ll be at least satisfied. If you buy the Makita, you’ll be blown away, if you buy the Bosch, well, you expect that level of performance from a household name. All of these will make life that much easier. But before you do buy, here’s some key points to consider. The shaft is unfortunately not telescopic or adjustable but it does give you some good reach at 220cm long. The cutting head swivels so you can use it to cut across the top of your hedges and the blades cut branches cleanly. This works well from ground given less manoeuvrability. The cordless trimmer from Flymo is simple to use and supplies immense power to get things done. It has a tilting head that gives an extra boost to your convenience.

The battery life for this product is pretty good and on a full charge you can expect to get roughly an hour’s worth of work out of it. Ideal for a smaller garden this offering. More often than not, hedge trimmers will be used for cutting conifers. To comfortably cut a conifer hedge, you’ll need a trimmer that can handle at least 14 mm branches . Look for models that stretch to 16 – 18 mm for additional power. As its name implies, this multi-purpose tool comes with both a hedge trimming head and a pole saw head. When the extension pole has been fitted, they provide a maximum reach of 2.1m and 2.4m respectively. Both attachments are high-quality – the hedge trimmer boasts a 51cm laser cut blade and 7 cutting head positions, while the pole saw comes with a 20cm Greenworks bar and chain. Although a secondary D-handle hasn’t been provided, Greenworks makes up for that by providing an adjustable shoulder strap – you can fix it to any point on the pole to give you the balance that you need when holding it. The Bosch Universal Hedge Pole 18 Trimmer is the best cordless hedge trimmer on the market. It’s a capable garden tool, with very few flaws, and that’s why I’ve placed it high on my list.In general, you want to be looking for a hedge trimmer with battery life of at least 30 minutes to give you a good amount of time to get your hedge trimming done. Some models can only achieve around 20 minutes, whilst others might get around an hour. The trimmer comes with a powerful 18v battery that delivers enough get up and go for most average gardening needs. While it may not be sufficient for larger branches, this is unlikely something that would be needed in a domestic situation.

Seeing as the motor is housed at the end of the pole behind the blade, a lot of the 3.6 kg weight is in front of your body. It’s top heavy and even when you take some of the strain with the shoulder strap, it takes a lot of goes to get comfortable. If you are looking for something to use commercially, or you have a very large property surrounded by high hedges, you might consider shelling out a bit more and going for a petrol powered pole hedge trimmer. There’s no question this is a cut above the rest (no pun intended). There are 13 angles you can set your pole hedge trimmer at so whatever the angle you’re looking for, you can get at it comfortably. I used a 2.5aH battery with this hedge trimmer, which allowed me to work for 30 minutes. Just like most of the other cordless hedge trimmers that I tested, this battery was an 18V, yet the machine still felt more powerful than some of the others. I love how the battery has an LCD screen that displays the percentage of battery life left – it’s definitely more high-tech than the competition! It’s also quieter than some of the other hedge trimmers out there – ideal if you’re using it in close proximity to your neighbours. Ultimately, it comes down to what’s most important to you. It might be that I’ve been spoiled by testing out all the best cordless telescopic pole trimmers on the market, because I was a bit nonplussed by this corded trimmer. For me, if it had been more powerful, I think I could justify being tethered to the national grid. Cordless gardening tools like Terratek trimmer gives you a great level of manoeuvrability. To be more useful, it works continuously for 45 minutes after a full recharge. And it should be doing the same, because of an 18V Lithium-ion battery.

Another impressive hedge trimmer from Bosch only this one is perfect for people whose hedges are much taller and wider. With the addition of a telescopic handle, you’ll notice that getting to those hard to reach spots is a breeze. What’s more, it comes with ten cutting angles so whether you want to cut horizontally or vertically, you have the option to do so. At 3.6 kg, this trimmer does get heavy at full extension, even with the shoulder strap. The front handle isn’t the best and has no rubberised grip, which makes it harder to manage at full extension. If you want to extend the performance of any hedge trimmer, it needs a decent blade cover. I’m happy to report that the blade cover is one of the best ones I’ve tried out. What makes it easy to use is that it’s more like a sleeve that completely encloses the blade. I much prefer it to a fiddly bit of plastic you need to feed onto the blade. It’s much better at keeping the dust off the blades for long term storage as well.
