About this deal

I really like LINWOOD BARCLAY’S writing style and he delivers another action-filled read here with a solid plot, strong characters, and lots of twists and turns to keep us engaged and guessing. Although, I did find it a little challenging at times to follow along with the storyline and all the characters involved as I would get a little mixed up with some of the characters and I had to figure out who was who a few times. I think I might have been a little distracted while reading this one and that could have been some of my problem. We also meet Lucy Brighton, the head of the guidance department at the school. (Look out for more from Lucy and Cal in) FAR FROM TRUE. Get out your scorecard, as there is so much in store, it will keep your head spinning! He can’t believe Marla’s capable of such violence and finds himself believing her story about the angel so sets about trying to prove her innocence. David is not cut out for all the drama. He had enough of it with his late wife, Jan, and the episode with Marla and her baby. Even his former reporting days had not prepared him for this kind of unrelenting stress. I thought this was an exceptional Barclay book. There are many threads to follow, but it's so well written, the reader doesn't get lost. The characters are so substantial they could be your neighbors. There are many twists and turns ... some of them are highly surprising.

I would like to thank Linwood Barclay, Net Galley and NAL publishing for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an unbiased review. With all the action and mysterious crime happening in Promise Falls— Final Assignment, makes its way to the high school with a group of teens and parents --bullying, social media, revenge, murder, and a damaging short story.Michael’s mom is a friend of the family, and Suzanne is now calling Cal for help. Michael did not come home. He is missing. Now in the middle, he is trying to help. In his youth Adam belonged to a criminal biker gang but gave it up to become a successful (and wealthy) writer....and Miriam is his beautiful third wife. His cousin Marla is in trouble. after losing her baby during childbirth, Marla is understandably not coping. When dropping off a food parcel from his mother, David finds blood smeared on the front door and Marla curled up with a baby in the bedroom! A rundown drive-in movie theater, the Constellation collapses, killing four people and injuring others. Demolition was not scheduled for the following week. The owner had sold the property to a developer, Mancini Homes and he and his wife were headed to Florida for retirement. A shootout at the laundromat, an attempt to kidnap a child, and we are just getting started. I’m assuming David and Barry will continue to be key characters in future novels and having solved the mystery of Marla’s baby David’s about to start working for mayoral wannabe Finley and we (like he) just know that will prove interesting.

Linwood Barclay knows how to keep the readers in suspense throughout the whole book by not only creating an interesting story but by having very short chapters with no unnecessary chitchat. Don't take me wrong I love books with lots of descriptions and when it takes time for events to happen and long chapters too. But now and then I just love to read a book when every chapter is short and crammed with action. Like this book. It was really hard to stop reading when I started to read the book. Just one more chapter... Barclay will discuss "Broken Promise" at 2 p.m. Aug 4 as part of "Between The Covers," the WXEL Book Club at the WXEL station, Boynton Beach to air Aug. 21. Barclay also will discuss his novel at 7 p.m. Aug. 4 at Murder on the Beach, Delray Beach. Move over Michael Connelly- The state of Florida and its loyal fans have room for two outstanding crime authors! I have been a fan of Linwood Barclay from the start and think his novel NO TIME FOR GOODBYE is still one of the finest thrillers I have ever read. Being a Canadian journalist/writer it is interesting at the amount of Barclay's work that is set in New York State. When the baby's real mother is found murdered, David can't help wanting to piece together what happened — even if it means proving his own cousin's guilt. But as he uncovers each piece of evidence, David realizes that Marla's mysterious child is just the tip of the iceberg. ( From Doubleday Canada) A special thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Berkley, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Linwood Barclay, and Penguin Group Berkley NAL for providing me with a copy of this book, which allows me to provide you with this review.

After spending his formative years helping run a cottage resort and trailer park after his father died when he was 16, Barclay got his first newspaper job at the Peterborough Examiner, a small Ontario daily. In 1981, he joined the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest circulation newspaper.Meanwhile Promise Falls is having a rash of other crimes. Twenty-plus dead squirrels were hung from a fence;
