About this deal

IEC 60320-1 defines a cord set as an "assembly consisting of one cable or cord fitted with one plug and one connector, intended for the connection of an electrical appliance or equipment to the electrical supply". It also defines an interconnection cord set as an "assembly consisting of one cable or cord fitted with one plug connector and one connector, intended for the interconnection between two electrical appliances". IEC 60320-2-3: Couplers with a degree of protection higher than IPX0 [7] specifies couplers with some degree of liquid ingress protection (IP). In its second edition published in 2018, the standard sheets were moved to IEC 60320-3.

Each type of connector and inlet is identified by the letter “C” followed by a number. The number for the appliance inlet is one higher than the number of the corresponding connector. C13 Connector and C14 Inlet C13/C14- This connector is used for larger electrical appliances, such as kitchen appliances, instrumentation amplifiers and computer hard drives. A C8B inlet type is defined by the standard for use by dual-voltage appliances; it has three pins and can hold a C7 connector in either of two positions, allowing the user to select voltage by choosing the position the connector is inserted. [22] Plug connector: "part of the interconnection coupler integral with or intended to be attached to one cord".This kind of coupler is used by Roland Corporation for a couple of synthesizer and drum-computer models (for example: TR-909, D-50) and by Revox for many older models of their hi-fi equipment (for example, A76, A77, A78, B77, B225). Was also used heavily on Marantz hi-fi equipment in the 1980s and 1990s. Connector: "part of the appliance coupler integral with, or intended to be attached to, one cord connected to the supply". C13 connectors offered by Interpower are rated at 10A/250VAC international and 15A/250VAC North America with a temperature rating of up to 70°C.

Xbox One [19] and some Xbox 360 power supplies, [20] some vacuum cleaners, CPAP machines, audio equipment, televisions, medical devices, IBM Wheelwriter typewriters. Pin temperature is measured where the pin projects from the engagement surface. The maximum permitted pin temperatures, are 70°C (158°F), 120°C (248°F), and 155°C (311°F), respectively (the higher temperatures are not applicable to interconnection couplers). The pin temperature is determined by the design of the appliance, and its interior temperature, rather than by its ambient temperature. Typical applications with increased pin temperatures include appliances with heating coils such as ovens or electric grills. It is generally possible to use a connector with a higher rated temperature with a lower rated appliance inlet, but the keying feature of the inlet prevents use of a connector with a lower temperature rating. Interconnection couplers are similar to appliance couplers, but with the gender roles reversed. Specifically, the female appliance outlet is built into a piece of equipment, while the male plug connector is attached to a cord. They are identified by letters, not numbers, with one letter identifying the plug connector, and the alphabetical next letter identifying the mating appliance outlet. For example, an E plug fits into an F outlet. Beginning with an amendment published in 2022, three of the commonly used high temperature variants have been standardized as types M–R. [26] UL certification E152635 covering YC-12 C13, YC-20 C15 and YP-32 C14 connectors. Note that the manufacturer's YC-20 label contains an error; the wire gauges (18, 16, 14) are repeated in the "current rating" column; the UL certification contains the correct values (10A, 13A, 15A). Retrieved 2014-09-24. IEC 60320-3: Standard sheets and gauges. [4] First published October 31, 2014, this part initially included the standard sheets for both appliance couplers and interconnection couplers. In a 2018 amendment, the standard sheets for the IP couplers defined by 60320-2-3 were added. [9] For appliance couplers the various coupler outlines are designated using a combination of letters and numbers, e.g., "C14". The connector supplies power to the appliance inlet. The appliance inlet is designated by the even number one greater than the number assigned to the connector, so a C1 connector mates with a C2 inlet, and a C15A mates with a C16A. Interconnection couplers have single letter designators, e.g., "F". They consist of a plug connector and an appliance outlet. The plug connector is the part integral with, or intended to be attached to, the cord, and the appliance outlet is the part integrated with or incorporated into the appliance or equipment or intended to be fixed to it, and from which the supply is obtained.Common uses for the C13 connector/C14 inlet include medical equipment, test equipment, and IT equipment, along with commercial appliances, some home appliances, data centers, power distribution devices, and professional food equipment, to name a few. Additional Resources In European countries the C15/C16 coupler has replaced and made obsolete the formerly common types of national appliance coupler in many applications. Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 60320.1:2004, Appliance couplers for household and similar general purposes Part 1: General Requirements (IEC 60320-1, Ed. 2.0 (2001) MOD). This is the Australian version of the IEC standard with national variations shown. The C13/C14 connector and inlet combination are used in a wide variety of electronic equipment ranging from computer components like the power supply, monitors, printers and other peripherals to video game consoles, instrument amplifiers, professional audio equipment and virtually all professional video equipment. An early example of a product that uses this connector is the Apple II. A power cord with a suitable power plug (for the locality where the appliance is being used) on one end and a C13 connector (connecting to the appliance) on the other is commonly called an IEC cord.

Standard sheet C25 shows retaining device dimensions. Sheet C26 shows detail dimensions for pillar-type terminals, where the end of the screw bears on a wire directly or through a pressure plate. Sheet 27 shows details for screw terminals, where the wire is held by wrapping it around the head of a screw. IEC 60320-1: General Requirements [1] specifies two- pole and two-pole with earth couplers intended for the connection of a mains supply cord to electrical appliances. Beginning with the IEC 60320-1:2015 edition, [5] this part also specifies interconnection couplers which enable the connection and disconnection of an appliance to a cord leading to another appliance, incorporating IEC 60320-2-2. At the same time, this part of the standard no longer includes standard sheets which were moved to a new part: IEC 60320-3. Also known as appliance couplers, a connector and an inlet enable the use of standard inlets and country-specific cord sets. This allows manufacturers to produce the same appliance for many markets, where only the cord set has to be changed for a particular market. The dimensions and tolerances for connectors, appliance inlets, appliance outlets and plug connectors are given in standard sheets, which are dimensioned drawings showing the features required for safety and interchangeability. There are 12 IEC connectors by shape; each has a different name for the Male or Female side. For example C7 is male and C8 is female, but both have the same shape connector. Below you can find a list of the IEC connectors we supply, and a diagram of each. For everything to domestic kitchen equipment to computer hardware in office environments, the IEC connector is available in different sizes and shapes to accommodate the current, temperature and earthing requirements of different appliances. Earthed, 16A, polarized. This coupler is used for supplying power in IT applications where higher currents are required, for instance on high-power workstations and servers, power to uninterruptible power supplies, power to some power distribution units, large network routers, switches, blade enclosures, and similar equipment. This connector can also be found on high-current medical equipment. It is rectangular and has pins parallel to the long axis of the coupler face. IEC - SC 23G Dashboard > Projects / Publications: Work programme, Publications, Stability Dates, Project files". www.iec.ch . Retrieved 2023-05-12. The C13 connector and C14 inlet are also commonly found on servers, routers, and switches. Power cord sets utilizing a C13 connector and an E interconnection plug are commonplace in data centers to provide power from a PDU (power distribution unit) to a server. These data-center power cables are now offered in many colors. Colored power cables are used to color-code installations. [25] C15/C16 coupler [ edit ] Similar connector to C5/C6, but with a key ridge instead of an earthing conductor, withdrawn from standard.
