About this deal

He and the three other children may be alive, but the jungle is a vast, untamed place. With no hope of rescue, the chance of getting home feels impossibly small. Except, it seems, someone has been there before them... I loved the way this narrative ran, it was a classic survival-in-the-wild style story but then we are introduced to a mysterious man called 'The Explorer' (I must not have read the blurb because this aspect was a surprise to me!). I loved this element of the story especially since this figure felt sinister at first but his development revealed hidden depths and a heart-warming relationship with one of our protagonists. With bold and bright illustrations, this book is a great way to find out about some unsung heroes and to celebrate the achievements of women around the world. 3. The Polar Bear Explorers' Club byAlex Bell, illustrated by Tomislav Tomic

For me this book touched my heart. It made me think about things, and it changed my way of thinking about things. This is a very beautiful story

And all of you - do not forget that, lost out here, you were brave even in your sleep. Do not forget to take risks. Standing ovations await your bravery,' Con swallowed. 'But I'm afraid,' she whispered. The Explorer nodded, scarred and dusty and matter-of-fact. 'You are right to be afraid. Be brave anyway.' Despite the unfortunate absence of suspense, Rundell makes up for the bland narrative by occasionally employing vivid language to describe the jungle: Auf "Mitten im Dschungel" war ich schon sehr gespannt, da ich Survivalszenarien schon immer sehr gern gemocht habe. Hier habe ich mir eine Geschichte voller Abenteuer gewünscht und diese auch bekommen, sodass mir das Buch gut gefallen hat. This book is based on the diaries of those who sailed to the South Pole on board The Terra Nova with Captain Scott in 1910. In the story, a member of the crew, Tom Crean, searches for somewhere on the ship where his pet rabbit can make her nest and have her babies.

As they get bolder and explore further afield, they see more traces of another human inhabitant, too – and then they find the map. Who was here before and where will the map take them?Author Vashti Hardy knows a thing or two about what makes a thrilling adventure for children - that's what makes her book Brightstormsuch a rip-roaring read! It’s admirable that Rundell has written a story that’s not entirely comprised of white children; however, all four children are exceedingly one-dimensional. Fred is brave, Lila is smart, Con is a brat, and disobedient Max has an endless supply of snot leaking from his nose. Throughout the book, their personalities are cemented; any growth or change is infinitesimal.

Space explorers, whether on the ground as scientists or the astronauts themselves, are a hive of amazing inspirational stories. This book tells the stories of 50 women who have contributed to space exploration from the past to modern day. Oddly, I had a really hard time getting into this one. It's right up my alley, so I'm not sure exactly why that was. My best guess is that this book read just like watching a movie. You could see every move people made, and hear what they said, and experience what they saw...but it didn't have the depth that I expect in a book. Yes, even a middle-grade book. There are many messages in this book and its hard to say what they are without spoiling the book, but there is the message of love being important, the important of caring for people, and the message that you are perfect just the way you are - never let anyone change you. With inventive touches to the story such as pygmy dinosaurs and frost fairies, the story landscape is easy to imagine and get lost in. It's punctuated with some stunning illustrations by Tomic which add beautifully to the atmosphere. 4. Tom Crean's Rabbit: A True Story from Scott's Last Voyage byMeredith Hooper,‎ illustrated by Bert Kitchen There’s a convincing depth to each of the characters in the story; the more time we spend in their company, the more we become attached and concerned about their plight. Con, in particular, is a character whose arc I especially enjoyed reading.

Katherine Rundell spent her childhood in Africa and parts of Europe before settling in the UK. She is the author of Rooftoppers, a story of one girl’s adventures across the rooftops of Paris, which won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award. I've included this as my last choice because it so perfectly shows how being an 'explorer' is as much about the simple joy found in discovering the everyday outside your doorstep as it is the great feats of exploring the wider world. I should be saying that I think Rundell is one of our finest and I hope she stays in the field of children's literature and does not leave. She has a style and heart which is so well suited to the genre - she never writes down and she writes with passion and humour which children will intrinsically love. Yet, the Explorer wasn't as strong, for me, as some of her other work - notably The Wolf Wilder, which is one of my favourites. Contia es una niña pija, solitaria y altiva, acostumbrada a arreglárselas sola pero rodeada de comodidades. Ahora deberá ampliar sus horizontes, ver más allá de su ambiente conocido.
