About this deal

I am spending twice as much money on the front axle for pads, in exchange for more stopping power. This isn't a con, it's just the cost of doing business.

While there are other Ferodo DS compounds available, Essex has chosen to focus our efforts primarily on the three discussed in this article. Some of the other DS compounds are either very similar in some manner to one of these three, or they don’t apply to the type of driving our North American customers do. Having additional options would simply make the decision more complicated than it needs to be. As noted earlier, we have found these three compounds to provide outstanding performance for the numerous and varied ways in which our customers drive. In other words, one of these three pads should make you happy, regardless of how you’re using your car! I was under the impression that DS2500's were Reg 90 but obviously every day is a schoolday somebody better tell AP.

Please keep in mind that Ferodo classifies all three of these compounds as race compounds, not road compounds. DS1.11- The DS1.11 has a lower mu than the DS3.12 at all temperatures and can be characterized as a moderate mu pad vs. other endurance racing compounds. They require more pedal force than the DS3.12, and they have a slightly declining torque curve as temperatures rise. As they get hotter and you dive deeper into a turn, you may feel like you need to push a little harder on the brake pedal to elicit the same response (which is a feel many drivers actually prefer). Some drivers feel that the DS1.11 is more controllable on street tires than DS3.12 since ABS cannot be activated as easily. R90 approval guarantees not only a pad which is safe & fit for purpose, but one which will operate as though it had been designed & specified by the vehicle manufacturer Ferodo Racing Brake Pads are designed and sold for off-road use only. They contain copper, and it is up to the owner to determine their fitness, suitability, and legality for the environment in which they intend to run them.

The aim of this regulation is to ensure not only a minimum level of quality in such a safety critical component, but also that the replacement brake part is appropriate for the vehicle designDS3.12- DS3.12 has the greatest max operating temp and fade resistance of any pad in the Ferodo lineup. On our dyno we took this compound through repeated series of stops over 1600°F with no fade, and we’re unaware of anyone ever fading this compound in real-world use. However there are a few countries we do not ship to, some of these include: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Russia, Nigeria, Macedonia, Syria, Ukraine, Lebanon. Why is postage on bulky items to some countries expensive compared to some other companies ? DS3.12- The DS3.12 has low to moderate cold bite. You do need to give yourself a little extra space on the first couple stops when they are cold. As with any higher mu race pads, they will wear your discs significantly faster than a road pad when run cold. They Personal opinion has nothing to do with it. And telling your insurance company still doesn't make the pads road legal. It's no different to running a chav-tastic HID conversion kit - the kits aren't type approved, so game over in the event of a collision, especially a fatal one and you are at fault! DS2500/DS3000 are not road legal pads. It's very simple. If you want to run performance pads on the road you need to be using something like Ferodo DS Performance (new name for DS2000) pads - which I use and they are excellent. They are a different compound and I believe it is to with the rate at which they reach optimum operating temperature.

DS1.11- DS1.11 is produced using many of the same ingredients as DS3.12 and carries a similar price tag. The DS2500 does have a very high max operating temperature though. It's extremely rare that anyone will fade it. What happens more often, as others in this thread have noted, is that it starts to burn up very rapidly when it gets ridiculously hot. Fortunately, that is a nice/gentle failure mode, and doesn't end badly (vs. the pad giving up all mu and you not having a brake pedal when you step on it...which is not a gentle failure mode!). Reg90 covers does however cover a multitude of requirements stopping power when cold / temp range being one of many, its a little like some of the very advanced brake fluids not getting classed as Dot5 - they may only be "Dot4" and massively outperform the best Dot5 fluids but they might not meet only one of the range of criteria that qualifys it as Dot5 such as freezing temperature. The brake pad manufacturer (Ferodo) has the responsibility for assembling physical data on the parts. The manufacturer must then (if licensed to do so, as in Ferodo’s case) complete a series of prescribed vehicle tests on the target vehicle and submit them to one of the European bodies appointed to issue R90 approvals. Baseline comparative tests on the OE components are done at the same time.

How do I place an order if I live within the UK ?

R90 is both application and friction material specific – each pad shape in DS Performance has to be approved individually as a separate comparison with the OE set-up Again, keep in mind that performance is relative. These are race compounds and are not going to perform as quietly or dust-free as a pad designed explicitly for those purposes This isn't a new issue, it's widely known that DS2500/DS3000 aren't road legal. If you go to the performance section of Demon Tweeks, under pads - they dont even list DS2500/3000, only DS Performance - you have to switch to the motorsport section. It has nothing to do with the setup, be it OEM, BBK, etc etc - it's all about the compound of the pad. So becasue we cant use it in Northern Russia in winter it gets a Dot4 label and not Dot5. Reg 90 only really means that the pads come in within +/- 15% of OEM - if they are 16% better then no approval, or indeed its cheaper for the manufacturers just not to bother applying for approval as its a "specialist" pad and a fraction of their market compared to how many pads they sell for Mondeos and Transits.

Manners (Cold Bite, Noise, Dust, Disc Wear):Despite technically being a race pad, the DS2500 has very good manners, and are by far the best in this area out of the Ferodo DS line of pads. They have more than ample cold bite and as long as they are bedded in properly, 2500 typically doesn't make any noise. When they do, it is a small squeak or chirp on the tail end of a stop. They are no harsher on discs than typical street pads. They have a moderate amount of dust that would be similar to the typical OEM pad on a European car, but the dust is not harsh and won't cause any problems with the paint finish, etc. You can be confident that our high performance brake pads undergo rigorous testing and development, from laboratory and dynamometer testing cycles to race circuit and road trials.DS2500- Despite technically being a race pad, the DS2500 has very good manners, and are by far the best in this area out of the Ferodo DS line of pads. They I promise you that if you have an accident and it comes to light that you dont have road legal pads (or road legal anything for that matter...) you are going to be in hot water. Granted it depends on the severity of the collision as to the level of detail that the investigation will go into, but you're a braver man than I if you are prepared to take that risk. I can't go into detail but I am very close to this sort of information and rest assured that people do get caught out by things like this all time. And do end up in serious trouble. Agree with it or not, its the law. Regulation 90 (R90) is a European standard which stipulates that all replacement brake pads sold in the EU for use in cars in production from 1999 onwards must be within +/-15% of the performance of the original equipment (OE) components which were sold with the vehicle
