About this deal

Our story commences in the present day when a young boy wanders into a bookshop in Dublin. And is greeted by Martha, who helps to inspire his imagination. Yet again Stephanie Butland has hit upon a wonderful idea and has created some lovely characters in these vignettes, all of whom have a different issue. George and Rosemary are a delightful couple and their lifelong love warms your heart Loveday is a fabulous quirky character and I enjoy the introduction of Kelly and Madison who are very likeable too. The Echo of Old Books meets The Lost Apothecary in this evocative and charming novel full of mystery and secrets. ‘The thing about books,’ she said ‘is that they help you to imagine a life bigger and better than you could ever dream of.’ Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review. The perfect book to curl up with . . . It's heartwarming, emotional and full of kindness. A lovely and life-affirming novel' Sara Nisha Adams

It made me laugh, it made me cry and left me with a feeling of community spirit – I will definitely be recommending this to others, it is a fantastic read‘ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ At times there is humour although not as much as in the last book which is understandable given the serious nature of the times. It’s very moving and poignant with some heartbreak and it’s thought provoking too. Along the journey there is kindness and thoughtfulness, there are situations that arise that overcome preconceptions and finding commonality along with plenty of honesty. A beautiful story that begs to be read in one sitting…a magical story filled with beautiful prose and many surprises that readers will not soon forget’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'd recommend them to anyone, and especially those recovering from a broken heart' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'It made me laugh, it made me cry and left me with a feeling of community spirit - I will definitely be recommending this to others, it is a fantastic read' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'This book is going straight on my list of top ten books' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'Her writing is utterly engaging and this book truly moved me.

Each chapter is told in the first person in turn by Opaline beginning in 1920’s Dublin, Martha in the recent past and that of Henry her recent acquaintance. I said to my mum (who isn't a particularly keen reader) that I wanted to exist in the world of this book. I know it's very much a normal world, full of pandemics and whatnot (and you're probably screaming that we did live in a world full of pandemics why would you want to again?), but this world and community she has created within the bookshop is perfect. Martha is special, too. In a different way. She has a gift of reading people’s emotions, finding out their secrets. But nobody liked her trespassing their private moments. So she ‘learned to hide these thoughts’ and ‘hid them so well’ she forgot where she put them. She is in an abusive broken marriage. Her self-esteem is shot. Repercussions arise from such emotional and physical battering. Initially she feels she is undeserving of good things and this self-depreciation follows her like a shadow. But she continues to hope for better until she realises this makes her miserable. She must choose between hope and happiness. But love is on her doorstep. Can she embrace it? The book is of course also about Covid and the losses which so many people faced. If you were one of those people this may not be the book for you. There was so much sadness in the book, so much death, and violence, miscarriage and ICU. It made me feel sad. It didn't uplift me in the same way that "Lost for Words" did.

Such a lovely read, very relatable and touching' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'I LOVED this book . . . A joy to read' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'One of the best books I've read in quite some time' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐Loveday Cardew's beloved Lost for Words bookshop, along with the rest of York, has fallen quiet. I read this book in one sitting, it made me smile and made me wipe a tear from my eye too' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ The lives of these three characters intertwine in a magical way. Equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful, this novel is beautifully written and captures the wonder and awe that a story can bring to its reader. HarperCollins, UK, One More Chapter stories have never been a disappointment and as I have never heard of Evie Woods as an author, I can say I will never forget the name and this opportunity. “The Lost Bookshop” is an enjoyable and mesmerizing story that transcends the reader into the lives of three interesting individuals…Opaline, Martha, and Henry. Each character brings to life their narratives in first person in Dublin; stories filled with mystery, magic, and fantasy.Rosemary and George have been married for fifty years. Now their time is running out. They have decided to set out on their last journey together, without ever leaving the bench at the bottom of their garden in Whitby. All they need is someone who shares their love of books.
