About this deal

Seventh Tree is the fourth studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released on 22 February 2008 by Mute Records. It was named after a dream Alison Goldfrapp had about a "very large tree". [5] Taking inspiration from paganism and surreal English children's books, [6] Goldfrapp described the album as a "sensual counterpoint to the glitterball glamour of Supernature", their previous studio album from 2005. [7] The resulting record marks the first time in their career that Goldfrapp were following trends instead of setting them. They had shaken off their association with the brief electroclash fad but a wave of acts, such as La Roux and Lady Gaga had moved in on their territory for female-fronted synth-pop. In February 2012, Goldfrapp released the compilation album The Singles. The album contained previously released material as well as two newly recorded songs. [51] 2013–2014: Tales of Us [ edit ] A radical reinvention of their sound, Seventh Tree – the title of which came from a dream that Alison had – revels in its confessional folktronica, reflecting a different side of the band than heard before. a b c d e f Simpson, Dave (4 May 2001). "The Mercury prize? Oh God, that would be great. I deserve something". The Guardian . Retrieved 25 March 2013. The word ‘re-invention’ often carries negative connotations in music; images of Madonna in a 70s jumpsuit flash before the eyes like a nightmare, a supposed fresh artistic direction thinly masking a cold and calculated aim at increased record sales. Goldfrapp’s new release ‘Seventh Tree’ has attracted similar criticism from some, claiming a sharp turn towards ‘off-brand coffeehouses’ and away from dark, arresting pop. ‘Seventh Tree’ is far from cold and calculating however, rather it’s an organic and mature progression from previous releases, marking a new chapter in an already great career.Welch, Andy (27 October 2008). "It's not all glitz for Goldfrapp". Chester Chronicle . Retrieved 25 March 2013.

The release of Seventh Tree is one of those situations where a record label is forced to wear that uneasy smile, immensely proud of supporting an artist with that much integrity, but weeping deep down inside, worrying about the certainty of lower sales figures. Equally odd for Mute Records to have to deal with is just how severely Goldfrapp has changed direction on its fourth disc. No contagious dance beats? No blunt come-ons? Acoustic guitar? Mellotron? Explaining that Seventh Tree had reflected a difficult period in her personal life, by the time the group began Head First Alison was in a much better space personally and wanted to celebrate that by making an upbeat record.

Emboldened by the critical and commercial success of their previous album, they felt liberated to be even more experimental and set out to make the biggest-sounding record that they could. a b "British album certifications – Goldfrapp – Seventh Tree".
