About this deal

The Hoover HF500 Anti-Twist Cordless Vacuum Cleaner has an informed, intelligent design. Instead of simply ramping up the main specifications for boosted suction or improved capacity, Hoover has approached the design of this device from a usability angle. And in doing so, the company appears to have considered where rival cleaners excel, and where they fall short, tweaking its model to make its users’ lives simpler. The 1.5 litre capacity of the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is around average, but still larger than the Shark NZ801UKT. It’s enough dust bin capacity to cover a good amount of ground without frequent emptying. As you can see from the chart below, the Hoover HF500 more or less holds its own in terms of suction power. However, it’s worth noting that the vacuum only has two power settings, where some rivals have three. For example, the Shark IZ300UKT has a standard power setting whose suction sits between its weakest and most powerful settings, designed for everyday cleaning. The HF500 has only standard and Turbo modes, so its standard suction is only a little better than the Shark model’s lightest, most economical setting.

The buttons for the bin release and emptying systems are clearly labelled and easy to use. Just remove the bin and press the button to empty it. There isn’t a collar to push the dirt out as you get on some Dyson models, however, so you may have to get your hands in to pull out clumps. Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach Tools and AccessoriesThe flour test is just as problematic for some vacuums, but the Hoover HF500 performed well here, too. On hard floors, it collected 98% of the flour I spilled in a single pass, leaving only a very light but still visible dusting behind. Hard floors aren’t a strong point for the 500 Reach. It struggles on most hard surfaces and is close to useless at getting dust out of gaps between floorboards. Starting with the Cheerios, the HF500 performed well. There are vents at the front of the floor head – gaps that can draw in and swallow larger items, such as chunky breakfast cereal. To protect your floors further, the 500 Reach has “Intellicare Technology”. This stops the brushes from spinning when the vac is stationary, which prevents scuffs. The Hoover H-Upright 500 Sensor Plus has a 11m cord, which means you can travel quite a way around your home before you need to stop and re-plug. A 4.5m hose also allows it the stretch it needs to clean up to 13 stairs at a time - this means you can leave the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs rather than having to balance the cleaner on each step.

The HEPA filter on the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is a pleasant surprise for a vac in this price range. HEPA filters are effective for trapping particles, so are a good option for allergy sufferers. Thinking of buying the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach? Read our in-depth review of this vacuum cleaner to learn more about its strengths and weaknesses. This is an excellent, compact upright for those who want comprehensive carpet cleaning, but perhaps not for those with hard floors. The good However, you need a screwdriver to remove the brush bar for cleaning, which isn’t the easiest method. Many vacuums we’ve reviewed have much simpler methods for removing the bar. And the belt for the rotating brush bar is a real weak point that’s prone to snapping. Other Tools and Accessories Unfortunately, we can’t say it does. The suction power isn’t great, and hard floors are a real struggle. You don’t get many attachments, and the ones you do get aren’t the best quality.

The belt may be broken or worn

Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the cleaning, so to speak. We tested the HF500 with our usual suite of challenging tests, spilling both flour and Cheerios on both carpet and hard floor, then measuring how much the vacuum collects on a single pass. The H-Upright 500 Plus comes with two washable HEPA filters (one in the top of the bin and one at the front of the cleaner), which is great news for allergy sufferers. They’ll need to be cleaned regularly.

As a plug-in model, cleaning reach is important, and the H-Upright 500 Plus provides up to 15 metres, thanks to the long power cable, hose and the extendable crevice tool (this is 36cm long and has a further extension tube to take it to 76cm). The net result is that whether you’re cleaning down low or up high, reach won’t be a problem with this cleaner; you’ll rarely need to lift its full 6.5kg bulk. Unfortunately, we think this vacuum cleaner has some major flaws that make it difficult to recommend. While it provides decent performance on carpets, it struggles on hard floors and is inconvenient to use. With that said, it’s available for a great price and could still be an option to consider if you have carpeted floors. What it doesn’t have is a fluffy roller for hard floor cleaning. You can switch off the rotating brush bar if you’re working on delicate floors, but you can’t switch it out for an alternative. There’s a reason upright vacuum cleaners are such a popular choice – this classic style does it all, with a lightweight, easy-to-manoeuvre design and exceptional cleaning power. From the HL5 to the best-selling Upright 300, there’s an upright vacuum for everyone. Our upright vacuum cleaners promise high-performance cleaning on all floor types. Whether you want to deep clean your carpet or tidy a hardwood floor, a versatile stand up Hoover will get the job done. Our upright vacuums also come with push and lift capabilities and instant release wands, allowing portability for all your above-floor cleaning needs, such as sofas and stairs. We know how frustrating it can be to get hair caught in your vacuum, which is why we’ve introduced ANTI-TWIST™ technology to our upright vacuums. ANTI-TWIST™ means you don’t need to worry about hair getting tangled; our tech automatically removed it from the brushbar. Good performance, an Automatic mode and neat onboard storage help make this a decent vacuum cleaner – but attaching the hose to use the accessories is super-fiddly. Hoover H-Upright 500 Plus design and features – Excellent storage and easy to use, but the hose is fiddly

At first glance, we couldn’t help but notice how busy the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach looks. There are all sorts of accessories and design features, making it a far cry from the slimline design of modern cordless vacs. You have one type of flooring in your home: While this machine works well on all types of flooring, if you have one type of flooring in your home, it may not be worth paying more for a feature you don’t need. If you're experiencing a loss of suction in your Hoover upright vacuum cleaner, then it'll be due to one of five reasons:
