I don’t currently develop any of my own C41 film, so I had to find a lab which would be happy to push my film chemically – not as easy as I thought it would be. I eventually found a place in Hatton Garden, and have never been disappointed in the results. Alongside these was a Portra VC, which stood for vivid colour and also came in ISO 160 and 400 versions. It works because nothing in the image is overdone, yet nothing is bland either. I assume, since I never shot them, that it’s like they took the differing attributes of the NC and VC versions and somehow got them to work together.

The Portra 400’s grain is noticeable in lower light settings, but its vibrant colors, sharpness, and warm skin tones make for one of the most versatile rolls of film you can place in your camera. Portra 400 is also made for 35mm, 120 (medium format), and large format (4×5”) cameras. But I will say the image qualities engineered into Portra 400 with portraits in mind translate very well to the street.

It might be hard to see, but with Portra 400 on the left, the overexposed areas aren’t as ‘blown out’ as they are with the Fuji on the right. Also, the Portra retains a bit more of the shadows than the Fuji does. Portra 160 seems to have the least forgiving latitude, whereas Portra 400 can handle 2+ stops over-exposure with some interesting side effects (see “ pastel colours ” below). In all three speeds, the film shows some colour shifts in over-exposed areas; however, they are relatively easy to correct in Photoshop . Portra films usually scan well. The ISO 160 version can yield teal colour shifts in overblown highlights and blue shifts in under-exposed shadows. The ISO 400 film does that less — but it does happen. Your scanner software may resolve that for you automatically. However, if you’re inverting your negatives by hand for maximum control, you may need to adjust the colour balance after the fact.
