About this deal

Capture amazing outdoor photos with vivid colour contrast, accurate colour reproduction and sharp images TL;DR– Meter at box speed of 400 for best results but err on the side of overexposure when you have to. If you have to overexpose the image, don’t worry either as the film can handle it very well.

GC 400 offers improved performance in all key photographic features. It delivers a great combination of brilliant colour saturation and accurate colour reproduction to give you clear, crisp prints. Now the choice is simple. It’s cycled through various ones down the years and they’ve likely differed from country to country too, albeit using different combinations of the same words for much of the time. For example in this image, I set the camera ASA to 400. Then I used the internal light meter of the Nikon F3 to meter and expose for the shadows by the river in the bottom left corner of the image. And while it’s more expensive than both Gold and ColorPlus, it’s not like you’re walking around wasting a roll of Fujicolor Pro 400H on decisively missed moments. What this also means is that if you’re shooting in a high contrast scene with bright highlights and dark shadows, you’ll be able to retain more detail at both extremes. All that said, for a cheap 35mm film with a rating of 400 ASA, the grain in Ultramax 400 could certainly be a lot worse!

As Ultramax is so closely related to Gold 200, it should come as no surprise that it gives you results with similar levels of that Kodak warmness. Now this is absolutely a matter of preference, but some folks actually like the look of the grain that presents itself in darker photos. Upon landing in Toronto, home to pet my cats then off to the hospital for a partial shoulder replacement surgery with titanium implants. Kodak also say Ultramax is designed to be developed in their own Flexicolor chemicals, which of course they would say, and to handle the undeveloped film in total darkness without the use of a safelight. Whatever the reason, and it’s probably me rather than the films, I’m happier with the colour and contrast the Ultramax gave these than the Gold did when I shot that.Faster 400 speed film makes it much more flexible to use in a variety of situations especially compared to 200-speed film. Achieve excellent results indoors without needing special lighting conditions or professional equipment
