About this deal

Soon, he's sending anonymous post cards with clues and suggestions to his subordinate Inspector Janvier and info to his favorite reporter which leads to the solving of the murder case. Too many times Maigret has missed his holidays as important cases have cropped up and he doesn't get away until midway through the third week of his 3 week break, always much to Mme Maigret's chagrin and disappointment. This time however his friend M. le Docteur has told him he needs to take all 3 weeks and needs to relax. Then it is revealed that Gilbert Négrel had apparently been having an affair with Jave's wife, although he had a fiancée, Martine Chapuis, whose father, Noël Chapuis, the barrister, took over Négrel's defense.Chapuis went down to Concarneau, where Éveline was from, and discovered that her past included a history of affairs. M keeps his promise to avoid the Quai, but occasionally sends an anonymous note to Janvier, or makes an anonymous call to a reporter. In the end, his realization of Philippe Jave's awareness of his wife's secret trip to Paris provides him the clue, and he transmits it again to Janvier, who wraps up the case. Jave had been in the house when his wife arranged to meet Négrel, who had kept his office hours, but gone home early after the confrontation with her. Jave had killed her with an injection, then stripped her to make it seem she'd met her lover.

On the one hand I love that Penguin is translating and publishing all the Maigret books that have never before appeared in English. On the other hand, there is probably a reason why these volumes were never translated -- for the most part, they are not his best. No sooner has Maigret started enjoying his holiday, when a sensational murder occurs involving two doctors. The updates on the murder are splashed through various daily newspapers and Maigret just can't contain himself. He has promised not to get involved but he can't help himself and starts playing detective and following the murder based on the information provided by the newspapers. A re-read of Maigret's Little Joke, now renamed. A novel of Simenon's love of Paris, as Maigret and his wife holiday in Paris and explore its streets and restaurants. My previous review:The episode features (as usual in this 4th series) more location film than had previously been the case, and Lucas even gets a trip to Cannes (the Doctor & his wife kept a holiday villa there). It soon becomes apparent that most of the key characters haven't been telling the whole truth, with some extra-marital affairs to unravel, and the murderer is discovered to have been at the murder scene when claiming an alibi somewhere else! And yet... Take this book for instance. Here we have M. Maigret, finally on vacation. He decides to spend hs free time in his Paris, with hi wife, rediscovering his town with the eyes of a tourist. OF COURSE there has to be a murder while he is on vacation, an investigation he cannot and does not want to follow, honouring his loyalty to his younger colleague, Janvier. The final episode of all, ending the 4th series, and it was a fitting, excellent show. Following on from the previous episode, which saw Torrance murdered, and Maigret shot, this one referred to the murderer's execution, AND the (much-delayed?!) promotion of trusty assistant Lucas to Inspector (though Maigret & his wife both referred to him as Sergeant, after all those years!). Georges Joseph Christian Simenon (1903 – 1989) was a Belgian writer. A prolific author who published nearly 500 novels and numerous short works, Simenon is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.

He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series, Pietr-le-Letton, appeared in 1931; the last one, Maigret et M. Charles, was published in 1972. The Maigret novels were translated into all major languages and several of them were turned into films and radio plays. Two television series (1960-63 and 1992-93) have been made in Great Britain. Directing was similarly shared by sixteen directors, with Gerard Glaister and Terence Williams responsible for eight each, Andrew Osborn seven, and Eric Tayler six. [2]Inspector Janvier was surely surprised to receive this clumsily scrawled question on an unsigned postcard. But he couldn't afford to ignore anything that might throw light on the mystery surrounding the discovery of the murdered woman in the doctor's consulting-rooms. This was the big chance of Janvier's career, the test of his ability as a detective, for he was conducting the investigation in place of his chief, Inspector Maigret, away on holiday. I love the way Maigret lives in this comforting homely world with his wife on the one hand and then as a detective enters a world where sex and violence are common place.

Similarly, Detective Chief Inspector Maigret goes on holiday for his health without leaving Paris; however, he promises both his wife and his doctor that he will not go to his office at Quai des Orfèvres — and he scrupulously does not. However, that does not keep Maigret from obsessively reading the newspapers, making a telephone call here and there, and writing anonymous tips for his subordinate, Inspector Janvier, who’s handling a high-profile murder inquiry. It’s a joy to see Maigret keeping pace with his colleagues at the police headquarters based on his experience and intelligence and without the usual access to evidence. Maigret is called to the home of Armand de Saint-Hilaire, a highly respected official who has been found shot dead in his study by his housekeeper. After interviewing everyone concerned Maigret is at a loss to the identity of the perpetrator until he comes across a series of letters from the past fifty years between the victim and a recently widowed woman. As Maigret uncovers the details behind the two's relationship he gets closer to discovering the tragic truth behind the official's demise. On Sunday, February 9, 1969, BBC One London aired Maigret at Bay as part of its series BBC Play of the Month. [8] This feature-length movie was based on the 1964 novel Maigret Defends Himself ( Maigret se défend), and featured Rupert Davies, Helen Shingler, and Neville Jason reprising their series roles of Commissaire Maigret, Madame Maigret, and Lapointe, respectively. [9] Episodes [ edit ] Solid support from the cast (well-known faces Ann Way, who was in masses of TV, and tons of stage work, Barry Letts, Stephanie Bidmead and Michael Goodliffe, amongst others), and a nice joke at the end, when Lucas shows that he'd known all along who had been sending the helpful anonymous notes! Barry Letts may be known by some viewers as having been a key figure in the Doctor Who series, producing and directing, also introducing some much-loved characters.

Although staying largely true to the storyline of the books, the series featured only three of Maigret's team of detectives (the "faithful four" [3]), omitting any casting for Janvier, although the character is mentioned in several episodes. The series starred Rupert Davies as the Police Judiciaire detective Commissaire Jules Maigret, who took up the role in 1960 after Basil Sydney, who had played Maigret in the pilot episode, was unable to continue. [1] Maigret’s talent in solving crimes is his ability to read people and understand why they do what they do. The DVD set of 14 discs does not include the booklet found in the Blu-Ray edition. Sleeve notes inform that the series has been "remastered from original film elements", most likely meaning Kinescope films as distributed world-wide, "original fullscreen TV format". I’m on holiday. Pardon let me stay in Paris on the firm understanding that I would not concern myself with anything but simply enjoy myself. For once, people can go around killing one another and it is none of my business.’
