This design is exclusively a SATA 6GB/s connected drive, and can be used in any PC or NAS that accepts SATA drives of that spec. The previous 18TB IronWolf Pro could read and write sequentially at about 260MB/s, and the 20TB achieved more than 285MB/s in most tests. That’s nearly a 10% improvement, almost the same margin as the increase in capacity.
It comes with 256MB of cache, a five-year warranty and three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services. MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) is 1.2 million hours, and the yearly workload is 300TB. We should mention that this definition of workload isn’t unique to Seagate, it’s the same for Western Digital drives, and their workload amounts aren’t different for the Red Pro 20TB.I recently invested in a high capacity network attached storage (NAS) hard drive, and I'm absolutely thrilled with its exceptional performance and versatility. These 12TB drives are 4K sectors with emulated 512bit sectors. You can get better random performance from reformatting to 4K sectors but my raid was already in 512bit sectors so I left these as is. Populated with supported IronWolf or IronWolf Pro HDDs It improves the overall system reliability by displaying actionable prevention, intervention or recovery options for the user.
One of the standout features for me is the CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) technology. This ensures consistent, reliable performance even under heavy workloads, making it ideal for demanding environments. I've experienced no drop in speed or reliability, even during simultaneous, high-bandwidth access from multiple devices. When we first saw these numbers, they sounded reasonable because the workload value isn’t like a TBW number on an SSD, as the 300TB is for each year of operation up to five years. The 256MB cache is a crucial component, significantly boosting read and write speeds for frequently accessed files. This cache has made a noticeable difference in the fluidity and responsiveness of my NAS, particularly during peak usage times. Synology doesn’t seem to support these newer drives Ironwolf diagnostics like it did my 4TB drives. A disappointment but not a big issue and not Seagate’s fault.
Oddly, while idle, the 20TB pulls a little more power than the 18TB, 5.5W from 5.2W, but critically when it is running, it uses less power. Down from 8W on the 18TB to 7.7W on the 20TB, its standby power level is also less. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items.I really wanted this high capacity, fast drive sat in my main PC, but not with this ever present low hum. If you play games or have a case that doesn't resonate with the 7,200 rpm drive, then this is a blisteringly fast option (See below for more details). However, I spend much of my time writing and so sadly, the hum proved too distracting for me.
