About this deal

A number of early Ultra HD discs had a darker image than the Blu-rays, but this 4K disc retains its bright palette and has a rather nice layer of film grain. Complexions err towards warm, but aren't too out of the ordinary. Visual effects can look soft in places, especially when Paul Giamatti’s Aleksei Systevich makes an appearance in an awful-looking Rhino suit late on. The Amazing Spider-Man' came about for all the wrong reasons (the fear of the property being reabsorbed into Marvel's cinematic universe, wrestled away from Sony), but proves to be just the right kind of film for the character. I'm more than a little dismayed at how poor an Aunt May Sally Fields proves to be, but the rest of the cast really do sell their performances and characters, in some cases making us forget all about the past films. By the time the film ended, I found myself thankful rather than upset with losing Maguire's somewhat dopey Peter Parker and the prospect of a film featuring Baker as the lead villain, as Garfield and Ifans truly embody the characters. I'm now anxious for 2014, even if it means I have to stare at Garfield's ridiculous hair again for two hours. This reboot was worth it, and I can't believe I'm saying that. Subtitles: English, English SDH, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Cantonese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Korean, Lithuanian, Mandarin (Simplified), Mandarin (Traditional), Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Swedish, Thai, Turkish What's really interesting about 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is the way it makes Connors a character that we come to know and understand, more than we do Uncle Ben in his limited time. This seems awkward, but I felt it made more sense, since the 2002 iteration seemed like it was a film divided into distinct chapters, rather than maintaining a steady flow and story. We don't have lengthy transformation sequences for the villain, as story is the focus rather than effects, and it works, helping keep this extraordinary story grounded in realism rather than going off the fantasy deep end. The villain, who seems like a bit of the ol' Jekyll and Hyde, is one we care for, and his path mirrors Parker's from loss to gain, though it is twisted in a more tragic manner. Adventure in a larger 3D open-world Manhattan with 6 detailed districts to explore, from the bustling Times Square to picturesque Central Park!

Foxx is good fun as Dillon/Electro though he’s missing for large parts and DeHaan brings a sinister presence even if his storyline is not the most convincing.

The action is spectacular, with new slow-motion parts interjected in moments of complex carnage being thrown at the eye (didn’t see this in 3D yet, but it will be a sight!). The overall tone of the film is a bit funnier than the last one but does in the last act turn quite sinister and affecting. All the performances from the cast are top notch. Real life couple Garfield and Stone definitely provide a short hand within their characters that transcends simply playing in love: they are in love, and it shows. This helps with the story’s arc for both of them and makes its conclusion all the more affecting. DeHann may be second fiddle in the billing on the poster, but he’s the standout villain in this one, providing a much more nuanced and relatable person to inhabit that Electro: the persecuted nerd (snore). Amazing heroic social events, including battling waves of bosses and opponents in Mysterio’s Arena! It’s a more colourful, richer and vibrant image too, as the 4K HDR version digs deeper than the Blu-ray. Spider-Man’s suit is made up of deeper and better defined blues and reds (especially with the Oppo 203). The luminescence that surrounds Foxx’s Electro takes on an even more palpable glow and the lighting in scenes seems vastly improved making for an evocative, natural-looking image.

There’s also the rush and thrill of the action sequences which are big, brash and over-the-top in a comic-book way. And while the film’s tone is erratic, when it works the film is fun. Written by James Vanderbilt, Steve Kloves, and Alvin Sargent, The Amazing Spider-Man tells the story of one lanky Peter Parker ( Andrew Garfield) as he struggles with the memory of his parents’ abandonment and what the means for him as he wanders (and rides his skateboard) through the halls of his high school. He's known for his photographic skills, but mainly he just wants to disappear. Bullied by Flash Thompson ( Chris Zylka) and befriended by Gwen Stacy ( Emma Stone), Parker stumbles upon a long-thought missing item from his late and mysterious scientist father’s past that leads him to the biotech laboratory of Dr. Curt Connors ( Rhys Ifans) at Oscorp Industries. First off I do think the cast is very good. Andrew Garfield I think is really good as Spider-Man but I don't buy him as Peter Parker. I just don't see him as this dork, in real life with that persona he'd be rolling it with the cool kids. But as Spider-Man he's really good, he's on par if not better than Tobey Maguire's portrayal as Spider-Man. Martin Sheen does a really good job as Uncle Ben, Sally Field is good as Aunt May even though I feel she doesn't have much to do, Emma Stone is great as Gwen Stacy even though she is pretty underdeveloped. And Rhys Ifans even though being the most underdeveloped character in this film he is excellently portrayed. This film is not without its flaws, and I don’t think this is a better entry than the first one, but when it does hit a nerve, it hits it out of the park, out of the city, out of state. The characters are likable, and you find yourself caring about the trials and tragedies that befall them. It’s a fun movie to watch, and it satisfies in having something to say along with all the spectacle. But for a few missteps, a superior sequel this might have been, but as it stands The Amazing Spider-man 2 is a worthy entry into a progressing narrative.

At 142 minutes there’s still a feeling it needs room to breathe, a film stitched together by exposition scenes that appear to take place in one elevator (or store cupboard) of Oscop. Fine detail is superb. You can count (if you really want to) all the small hexagons that make up (much improved) Spider-Man suit, as well as the texture and details on clothes and faces, whether it’s the amount of stubble on Garfield’s face or the spot above DeHaan’s eyebrow. The 4K disc really does reveal new details. There was a risk in this film, just like the downfall of ‘Spider-man 3’, of having too many stories choking the film and not allowing plot threads to breathe and resonate. They avoid it, just. The narrative is a busy one, with multiple players, but everything cross-connects and comes to bear in an entertaining and satisfying way. The Amazing Spider-Man was okay. I personally wasn't very emotionally invested with this film as much as I was with the Raimi trilogy. For me I felt that this film was pretty soulless. I'm gonna go into some positives first then I'll go into negatives.
