About this deal

It was Tarrant's greatest race," said race organiser Eddie Gutteridge in Jones' book, The Ghost Runner. Update (03/2021): I mean at this point do we expect me do give Mr. Reynolds anything less? Absolutely not. This book was just as good as I remembered and definitely one that needs to be in the hands in as many kids as possibly. As I've stated in my previous thoughts, Ghost (Castle) is such a complex character and it's through his complexity that readers are truly able to appreciate the story as a whole. Ghost definitely isn't always an easy read, but it's a necessary read. It's a book that will resonate with a lot readers and not just children, but adults as well. I have already put the second book on hold at my library. It's about time that I finish this series and figure out what happens with all of the other characters. But let me tell you, my dad was lying. Wasn’t no sunflowers growing in him. Couldn’t have been. I don’t know a whole lot about sunflowers, but I know they’re pretty and girls like them, and I know the word sunflower is made up of two good words, and that man ain’t got two good words in him, or anything that any girl would like, because girls don’t like men who try to shoot them and their son. And that’s the kind of man he was. Jason Reynolds always manages to squeeze numerous topics into his books without making the narrative feel over crowded. Ghost touches on thievery, drug abuse, gun violence, bullying, honesty, family dynamics, friendship, and finding healthy ways to channel anger and hurt into positive action.

Consider the way that the author contrasts Glass Manor with Sunny’s neighborhood in Chapter 7. How does this contrast help you understand Ghost? However, in 1940, with their mother's health failing and their father called up to man London's anti-aircraft batteries, the brothers were sent to Lamorbey Children's Home in Kent. There they would remain for the next seven years.

On the morning of 6 September 1970, as runners gathered in Stanger for the Gold Top Marathon, a 50-mile race to Durban, there was a solitary white competitor: John Tarrant. He won it in five hours 43 minutes.

Ghost must come to terms with what he's running from and decide where he's running to: "you can't run away from who you are, but what you can do is run toward who you want to be."Today, in his adopted home of Hereford, close to the city's running club, stands a sculpture in his honour - created, somewhat symbolically, by vulnerable teenagers living in a residential home nearby. The Ghost Runner is the simultaneously inspiring and tragic tale of an athlete who fights to overcome a series of difficulties that stand in the way of his dreams.

He used running as his psychological help," says Nicola Tyler, who is chair of the Ghost Runners running club in Hereford and was trained by Tarrant's brother Vic for many years. The author is British and there are lots of “britishisms” in this book making it almost feel as if I was reading a foreign language, but the humanity in the story comes through loud and clear. John ran all kinds of races including 5ks, 10ks, 10 milers, and Marathons. He got bored with those “short” distances and got into ultra running (50-100 miles and more.)

It's real, it has a very strong voice and character (I'm actually sad that the rest of the books in the series are supposed to be about other characters), and it's about a sport/fitness activity that a lot of people can do easily: we need more lit about stuff like this. How does Coach Brody convince Ghost to join the Defenders? How does he convince Ghost’s mom? How hard is it to balance athletics and academics?

Castle Crenshaw (or Ghost, as he wants to be called) knows he can run fast. He knows because when his dad came at him and his mother on one violent night, running was the only way to get away. Life hasn't been super kind to Ghost - the kids at school make fun of him because he's poor and he carries around the weight of his father's betrayal. It wasn't until August 1947 that their father collected them. Recently remarried and with a new-born baby, he moved the family to the Derbyshire town of Buxton, on the edge of the Peak District. A stark setting at the best of times, life at Lamorbey was intensified by the terror of the Blitz. It got worse for the Tarrant boys. Two years later, their mother Edna died from tuberculosis. Two weeks later a letter arrived returning his six shillings subscription fee. He was informed that he was now banned from amateur athletics for life - including events such as the de facto British championships and trial races for Olympic selection. He bombarded officials with replies, pleading his case, but to no avail.
