About this deal

Training Day won an Oscar for Best Actor (Denzel Washington) and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (Ethan Hawke). The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua based on the book by David Ayer. The cinematography was directed by Mauro Fiore and the music score by Mark Mancina. Everyone talking about the artwork needs to go look at the Titanic poster for the 2023 rerelease. Some shitwit actually photoshopped two pictures of Rose together with two different hairstyles, and it shows. It makes WB’s covers look like Da Vinci did them. In Washington's hands, Alonzo is no scene-chewing caricature but a fallible individual whose so-called glory days are about to catch up with him. The performancedramatically anchors the movie, amplifies its undercurrents and deservedly won Washington his second Oscar.

The audio is certainly more dynamic in Atmos/TrueHD 7.1 with excellent bass notes that you can feel especially during the gun fights. There is some surround sound happening in which bullets, cars, and street noises immerse you in the scene. The situations escalate in intensity until Jake is put to the ultimate test of his moral compass in act three. While each character’s fate ends up in line with what you might expect to happen to them, I’d argue that the overall story still asks the question, “Where’s the line when you’re a police officer dealing with hardcore criminals who have a ‘kill or be killed’ mentality?”

Rating Certificate: R (for strong brutal violence, pervasive language, drug content and brief nudity) turned in some of his most bracing work for this amplified tale of "good cop, bad cop" during one particularly eventful day in Los Angeles. It's a tightly You have to keep in mind though this film does have different color grading than previous presentations. There are yellowish and greenish casts that are not evident in previous HD versions (even digital) which appear warmer. But this color grading is truer to the original theatrical presentation on film. Fuqua makes a strong partnership with David Ayer who revels in the complex moral dynamic between Alonzo and Jake. "I walk a higher path son," Alonzo intones when Jake doubts that his so-called training day isn't going as he imagined. The movie smoothly assimilates strong dialogue and violent set-pieces while avoiding a stop-start momentum. That said, what makes Training Day jump off the screen is Washington’s remarkable turn as a corrupt cop whose street-savvy practices ultimately led him down the wrong path. Occasionally, we get a glimpse of the man he used to be before power and cynicism corrupted his mentality. Still, we also come to understand his unorthodox ways. He’s a cautionary tale and perhaps even a dark vision of Hawke’s inevitable future. L.A. produces no heroes.

I find some jobs to be fascinating from a point-of-view of “I could never do that in a million years.” Yes, I’m a middle-aged white guy with a marketing job who works from home and can’t even begin to imagine the complexities that a guy like Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington, in an Oscar-winning performance) navigates in Training Day. Idealistic young cop Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) is a newlywed and an expectant father. His goal is to make detective in the LAPD and the fastest way to do this is to join the undercover division. While here, he has to work the streets for a year or so before earning his promotion. Hoyt gets the opportunity to work under Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington) where they spend the day getting to know one another and patrol some of L.A.’s toughest neighborhoods. Alonzo has streets smarts and prefers a different kind of law – he lets criminals go after he’s scared them and so forth. As the day progresses, Hoyt witnesses a different kind of policework and it’s not one that he’s too fond of. Is Alonzo the force’s saving grace or just a corrupt cop?

"Training Day" is a blistering action drama that asks the audience to decide what is necessary, what is heroic and what crosses the line in the harrowing gray zone of fighting urban crime. Does law-abiding law enforcement come at the expense of justice and public safety? If so, do we demand safe streets at any cost?
