About this deal

Before he knows it Charlie is in a different world, one from long ago. The Stone Age. He must do all he can to try and survive this new environment. Trust, is something which he will need to start to do or he could find himself in a great deal of danger. The Wild Way Home is an emotional adventure about courage, inner strength, hope and facing the harder parts of life together.

I learnt lots about the Stone Age. People had to do so much just to survive in that time. They had to get water from wells or sink holes. They had so much danger in their lives. They had lots of adventures in their everyday lives. And Charlie is a long, long way from home. Charlie has unwittingly fled into the Stone Age, with no way to help the boy or return to the present day. Or is there…? The thing that most stood out for me was the relationship between Charlie and Harby. They really helped one another, in lots of ways, even though they came from such different times. I actually had my first review (on Toppsta) from an actual real child the other day. Aubie (aged 7) said: “I loved The Wild Way Home because you travel to the stone age!! It is set in a forest and there are lots of adventures and you have to sing the spirit song to the animals to keep them away. I really liked the character Harby because he talks in stone age language and he knows how to sing a spirit song. Some bits of the book were sad and some bits were happy so it made me feel happy and sad. I also felt very excited as I wanted to find out what happened next!” This was an absolutely stunning MG fantasy book. The writing was beautifully powerful and descriptive, which made for a real feast for the senses. This threw books like Ug and Littlenose to the wayside completely. If I was looking for a Stone Age book to teach with, this would be high up on the list. It doesn't just show you a view of the Stone Age, it highlights the importance of family and friendship too!

What made the history or the time it was set in interesting to you?The characters talking in their own language.

In this story there were very sad moments, which bought tears to my eyes, such as when, they discovered they had taken the life of a mother wolf from her pups, and when Harby discovers the death of his own mother. This made me think about how it would feel to lose members of my own family. This multi-layered time-slip adventure is both thrilling and moving. In the midst of life-threatening danger from wild beasts and environmental hazards, Charlie unexpectedly learns about his fears, his courage, his compassion and the importance of family and love. Which brings me to another warm-hearted Northern Irish gem of a book, this time for teenage readers. Flying Tips for Flightless Birdsby Kelly McCaughrain It intrigued me because there is a modern times boy who has mixed feelings about his new-born baby, even though he has really been looking forward to a sibling being born. His friends and his dad are understanding but he still can’t get over his feelings. I like the boy’s relationship with his dad, I don’t think I would be allowed to stay up late like that. Coffee house Caffè Nero has announced the 16-strong shortlist for the inaugural Nero Book Awards, recognising the outstanding books of the past 12...

I found it funny when Harby, the stone-aged boy, and Charlie talked to each other, trying to make sense of each other’s language, whispering and speaking words and sentences that weren’t in the stone-age dictionary! There are some beautiful descriptions of the woods and nature throughout the story. I wondered if Mandel Forest was inspired by a place near you? Did you spend a lot of time outside whilst writing this book? My opinion:It was amazing because it has so much action, And it was a little bit sad because it has 2 deaths and they are of parents they were the wolf mum and Harbys Mum. It is 5 stars. What follows is a brilliantly written and engaging adventure, full of peril, laughter, cliff-hangers (quite literally), friendship and heartfelt emotion. The Wild Way Home has something for everyone.

Charlie has always wanted a sibling and was eagerly anticipating their arrival. His brother is born near midnight on the day before Charlie's twelfth birthday but the excitement is tinged with dread as his baby brother is born with a heart defect that needs immediate surgery. That news has Charlie literally running off to the nearby forest where he usually plays with his friends. This time, however, he finds a boy, lying in the river and discovers that he may be on familiar ground but he's no longer in his own time! Thus starts a moving adventure set in the stone age in which he discovers the meaning of family and how important it is to 'make safe'. What follows is a wild, big-hearted adventure as Charlie and the Stone Age boy set out together to find what they have lost – their courage, their hope, their family and their way home. Some of this book was funny but there were some very serious points too. One was when Charlie ran away without thinking. This could have been really dangerous - and it made Charlie swear! I really loved this story. There was a real bond between the two boys, despite being separated by thousands of years of difference, and they both taught each other their own ways and helped each other heal from their losses. The book was compulsively readable too, which new dangers being introduced it kept me guessing. The thing that most stands out is that a twelve year old had to go on a special adventure to cure heart disease. Normally it is adults who do this. Characters:Charlie is a boy that is determined to get out of the stoneage. Harby is strong and is determined to find his baby sister Mothga. The Knifeman is the believed villain of the book and looks after Mothga but he doesn't know his son Harby is looking for her. Beaky is kind and is the nicest of Charlie's best friends.

Charlie Merriam has counted down the day until her new baby brother or sister is born. It seems as though it might arrive on her twelfth birthday. Meanwhile she plays in the woods with her friends Beaky and Lamont, and Nero the dog. Somehow their games throw up shadows of past travellers through this forest. Furthermore, Charlie feels the presence of Hartboy, someone who existed here once, civilisations before. It seems he has some link to the deer tooth that Charlie finds on the eve of the birthday, alongside the same time that the baby arrives…. From reading the book I learnt a lot about the Stone Age. I found out that they spoke a different language to what we speak now. I learnt that they wore clothes made from animal skin but not like the clothes we wear now. Hello there! The Wild Way Home is a story of friendship, courage and adventure, set in the Stone Age. There may be dangers… there may be mysteries… there may be secrets… The wild way home is one such book which anyone can read irrespective of their age. Book is a mix of fantasy and mystery which keeps the reader fall in love with the book all over again. Book cover is also very beautiful and enough to grab the attention of readers.Gorgeously magical and achingly real. I loved every character in this book and I devoured the whole story in a breathless rush because I couldn't stop reading (even when it made me cry) Stephanie Burgis, author of The Dragon With a Chocolate Heart
