About this deal

Feel safe and worry-free when you take your children out on trips or excursions, as you can locate your child with the X5 Play, thanks to its GPS feature. You can also create Safe Zones, which will alert you whenever your child leaves or enters the zone. EE, the UK’s best mobile network, partners with Xplora to offer the X5 Play, a smartwatch designed to help keep families connected and get children active As well as offering mobile services to consumers and small and medium businesses, EE also provides home and business broadband using both 4G and fixed line connections. There is a speaker onboard that's primary purpose is to handle calls and it wasn't long before voice messages were getting sent. Call quality was clear though isn't going to rival the clarity you'd get on a smartphone.

Stay safer – The X5 Play uses GPS in combination with GSM and WIFI triangulation to keep parents informed where their children are at all times. Additionally, parents can easily set up safe zones, and they will be alerted when their children enter or leave them. It is a high-tech device that houses many functions, which makes everyday life easier and more fun for both children and adults. In addition, Xplora's smartwatches are an excellent source of increased activity, engaging entertainment and important humanitarian work. And perhaps most importantly, giving children a safe introduction to the digital world. We enlisted a 5-year old tester to see what the Xplora X5 is made of, whether it works and whether this is a kids smartwatch to snap up.

Cons

This SIM card part has to be done first before you pair the watch up with your phone. Once the activation part is done, there's a QR code on the watch that's scanned by your phone to establish the connection between the two. In terms of the companion app for the parent, it is a bit underwhelming. Location reporting can be incorrect. The inability to create custom rewards for the Xcoin program is disappointing, and not seeing the live step-count on for the watch is frustrating. While these aren't deal-breakers, the software feels like an afterthought for a device that is so well thought out from a hardware perspective. Our testers were really excited to test the Apple Watch SE, but that's where the excitement ended. After testing the other watches that were designed just for kids, we all agreed that the Apple Watch SE doesn't have the features that appeal to younger kids, and that it was actually difficult for them to navigate it. If you have a tween or teenager who has an iPhone and is used to the quirks of an Apple device, the Apple Watch SE may be a good choice for them, but if they already have a phone, they likely don't really need a watch, too.

It also doesn’t have a built-in camera, but it can be used as a controller for your kids’ phone camera, making it handy to have around when snapping a selfie with friends. The Xplora X5 Play is a good-looking kid's smartwatch with some great ideas for encouraging activity. The safety features available for the parents are well implemented and allow you to monitor your child as needed. The microphone issues can pose problems when your child is making calls in noisy environments, and the preset reward system can be disappointing.Of course, as any device designed for kids should be, there are elements of fun in the Xplora X5 Play. When you give a device that allows for a kid to make calls, send messages, and take photos, there is bound to be silliness involved — and my son took full advantage. Getting messages from him would be emojis, sending funny voice recordings, and the goofiest would be his hilarious selfies. Smartwatches for kids also come with features that are dedicated to kids; hence the name. This includes games, music, and picture-taking abilities that appeal to them. Every child wants their own phone from the time they're about 7, and this watch is a way to give them a taste of having a phone that also gets them moving. The Xplora X5 Play includes a giffgaff SIM with unlimited calls and texts and 500MB of data, which you can set up with a monthly or pay-as-you-go contract. The speaker on the watch is about as good as can be expected for such a small device. It's just good enough for calls and music, so long as your child isn't expecting high-fidelity output. My son loves music, and the watch supports audio files. However, the only way to put music on the Xplora X5 Play is by sending it in a message, and the file must be under 5 MB. Messages and chat: The mobile watch can receive messages via Chat, which the child can reply to with pre-installed messages, emojis and voice messages - no boring text messages! The mobile watch can receive SMS, but not send SMS. EE has received extensive independent recognition, including being named the UK's best network every year since 2015 for all the following awards: The Mobile Choice Awards, The Mobile News Awards, The Mobile Industry Awards and by RootMetrics®. Specifications – Display: 1.33in colour touchscreen; GPS: Yes; Battery life: 1 day; Colours: Blue, grey and pink; Waterproof: IP54; Recommended ages: 5+
