About this deal

I wonder whether he was created very early on, perhaps in the late Saxon period, but then became grassed over and was forgotten," Papworth said. "But at some stage, in low sunlight, people saw that figure on the hill and decided to re-cut him again. That would explain why he doesn’t appear in the abbey records or in Tudor surveys." Cretaceous Chalk: Some chalk deposits are specific to the Cretaceous period, and they are often referred to as Cretaceous chalk. The famous White Cliffs of Dover in England are examples of Cretaceous chalk. The hill figure is most commonly known as the "Cerne Abbas Giant" [20] [21] [22] [23] or "Cerne Giant", [20] [24] the latter being preferred by the National Trust, while English Heritage and Dorset County Council call it simply "the Giant". [3] [25] It has also been referred to as the "Old Man", [26] and occasionally in recent years as the "Rude Man" of Cerne. [27] [28] Although the best view of the Giant is from the air, most tourist guides recommend a ground view from the "Giant's View" lay-by and car park off the A352. [29] [30] This area was developed in 1979 in a joint project between the Dorset County Planning Department, the National Trust, Nature Conservancy Council (now called Natural England), the Dorset Naturalists Trusts, the Department of the Environment, and local land-owners. The information panel there was devised by the National Trust and Dorset County Council. Chalk can be classified historically based on its various uses throughout time, such as classroom chalk, artist’s chalk, or geological chalk used for scientific research. According to Papworth, it's possible that people have been re-chalking the Rude Man over a very long period of time, which would explain the different dates, as well as all the evidence suggesting the giant's features have changed over time. A 2020 LIDAR scan, for instance, revealed that the impressive phallus had been added much later—perhaps when the figure was re-cut as a Cromwell parody in the 17th century. Even Eddie, the protagonist of the piece, veers a little too close to the ‘so snarky and dry it’s just unimaginable picturing someone this rude in life’ for me. Education: Chalk is essential for teaching and demonstrating concepts in classrooms, particularly in mathematics, science, and other subjects. It provides a visible and erasable medium for educators.

A 1996 study found that some features have changed over time, concluding that the figure originally held a cloak over its left arm and an object, possibly a severed head, beneath its left hand. [11] The former presence of a cloak was corroborated in 2008 when a team of archaeologists using special equipment determined that part of the figure had been lost; the cloak might have been a depiction of an animal skin. [12] In 1993, the National Trust gave the Giant a "nose job" after years of erosion had worn it away. [13] [14]

Texture: Chalk has an extremely fine-grained texture, making it feel smooth and somewhat powdery to the touch. This fine texture allows it to be easily scratched or crumbled into a powder.

Cerne Abbey was founded in 987 CE, and given the evidence for a medieval origin date, it's possible that the giant was created to help convert local inhabitants from worshiping the early Anglo-Saxon god Heil (or Helith). However, Papworth is skeptical of this theory. "Why would a rich and famous abbey—just a few yards away—commission, or sanction, a naked man carved in chalk on a hillside?" he said. Mike Allen, a geoarchaeologist at Allen Environmental Archaeology in Codford, U.K., who led the year-long study on the hillside carving, said the results were “not what was expected.” The earliest known written reference is a 4 November 1694 entry in the Churchwardens' Accounts from St Mary's Church in Cerne Abbas, which reads "for repairing ye Giant, three shillings". [34] [35] In 1734, the Bishop of Bristol noted and inquired about the giant during a Canonical visitation to Cerne Abbas, while in 1738 the antiquarian Francis Wise mentioned the giant in a letter. [36] The bishop's account, as well as subsequent observations such as those of William Stukeley, were discussed at meetings of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1764. [37] [38] The earliest known written reference to the Cerne Giant appears in a 1694 warden's account from St. Mary's Church in Cerne Abbas, recording the cost of three shillings to repair "ye Giant." There are also references to the figure in a 1734 letter by the then-Bishop of Bristol and a 1738 letter by antiquarian Francis Wise. The first survey to mention the giant was published in 1763 and included measurements and a drawing. After that, mention of the giant becomes far more common in the historical record. Chalk can be classified based on various criteria, such as its chemical composition, texture, color, and historical uses.
