About this deal

Let’s explore colour some more through messy play! The children might like to experiment with paint or water and food dye by mixing colours to see what new colours they can make. What colours can they create and what feelings do they link with their new colours? Start this fun craft with one half of a paper plate to which a straw is stapled. The straw is the “handle” for the glasses and should be stapled on the right or left side. Introduce the story, ‘The Colour Monster’ by Anna Llenas or listen to it being read here. There are some questions in the clip after the story which might help to scaffold a discussion around the story. When the child has colored the monster, it should be reinforced with cardboard and cut out, with an extra half-inch of paper left at the bottom. The book also emphasizes being able to feel and honor whatever feeling comes up and tell us that it is OK to feel all of these feelings, it is okay to listen to our bodies, and it is okay to cry! So powerful, especially for young people who often get flooded and want to repress feelings.

At the start of the story, the Colour Monster is feeling confused. When have you felt confused? What did you do in this situation? What can we do when we feel confused in the future? Colouring is a great way to encourage the development of cognitive and motor skills in young children. Through practising colouring and encouraging children to colour within the lines, they are not only making a lovely keepsake for parents and carers, but honing the following skills: Alternatively, they are also a fun and exciting way to round off the final lesson. Great for enhancing focus and concentration, as well as giving young children the opportunity to detach from the challenges they have experienced throughout the school day.In this story, yellow refers to happiness, red is for anger and blue is linked to sadness. Do you agree with those colour choices? Why? With this innovative craft, your child can create a “friendly” monster and use it for a funny greeting card. Practice drawing faces that show different emotions. Can you draw a happy face? Can you draw an angry face? Use a mirror to see how your facial expression can change to show emotions.

A heart should be traced and cut from colorful paper, and the cutout should be placed in the monster’s “hands.”

Here’s hoping this activity brings you and your clients some superpowers to help untangle those messy, chaotic, and confusing feelings! Children easily gain a better understanding of how artists use color to express emotion during this lesson. As an extension activity, the discussion could also focus on what things help when they are feeling sad, afraid or angry. Did you know that Twinkl uploads hundreds of resources every month? When the monster is colored and cut out, position it behind the triangle with its eyes showing through. Next, each child should have a paper plate colored to look like a pumpkin, with a slice cut out to make it appear as if the top is opening.
