Over the years, Burton's thoughts regularly returned to the project, and in 1990, Burton and Disney made a development deal. Production started in July 1991 in San Francisco. Walt Disney Studios initially released the film through Touchstone Pictures because the studio believed the film would be "too dark and scary for kids". This happened in the original 1993 release only, as Walt Disney Pictures owned the movie since its 3D reissue. The weird and whimsical masterpiece from the mind of Tim Burton and Walt Disney Pictures has delighted audiences for decades, but the Haunted Mansion Holiday has been the premier Nightmare Before Christmas event outside of the live concert version. However, Disney is finally giving the Florida park a taste of the action, and it’s bound to have a much bigger crowd than the Haunting at Disneyland. Roger Ebert said as much in his glowing three-and-a-half star review of the film in 1993: “This is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen.” Although this is simply a stand in for the Frozen variant, Burton’s holiday tale does lend itself over to a stage adaptation a lot better than some might think. Although some might be disappointed that Disney World isn’t getting a ride, it’s still a heaping helping a fan service.
