This photo from the early twentieth century shows a pub on the corner of Silver Street where it intersected with Prospect Row. The Jewish Maternity Hospital in Underwood Rd was designed by John Myers in 1911. This Arts & Crafts style cottage with its elegant crow-stepped gables was reminiscent of a streetscape by Vermeer and, athough it had lost its diamond-paned leaded windows, it retained its original doors and ironwork. Her commitment and enduring voluntary work for the people of the area was rewarded by being given the honour of an MBE. She accepted this on behalf of local people rather than for herself.

Church Street contains two of the early eighteenth century merchants’ houses that hint at the grandeur of this area at that time. The building (built in 1711) that is first visible from High Street East has “Angels’ Place” painted on its gable wall. This is the home of the Sunderland Hell’s Angels, and their bikes are often found gleaming in the sunshine in the street outside. Add to that the magnificent transport hub in and out of Stratford, which has got to be one of the best in Europe; there is the real makings here of a new beginning.
