About this deal

Meanwhile, there was an Ektachrome E100VS for a while (but now discontinued), and while the colors may still have been different than Kodachrome’s, it had the higher contrast that reminded me of Kodachrome (and shadows tending bluish as with Kodachrome), while Ektachrome E100G and the new E100 have lower contrast (which means greater exposure latitude, though). E100VS was called “VS” for Very Saturated, and so it colors had somewhat more “intensity” than regular E100G/E100, but presumably inspired more by Fuji Velvia than by Kodachrome. The quality and development convenience of this film — as compared to the complex K-14 process — eventually earned it a revered position amongst the greatest photographic mediums of all time. Ektachrome has been to space; it is the film that captured the surface of our moon and an image of earth that has inspired the minds of millions.

Retrieved September 26, 2018.This is a process-to-completion step, and relies on carry-over of pre-bleach to initiate the bleach. The bleach converts metallic silver into silver bromide, which is converted to soluble silver compounds by the fixer. During bleaching, iron (III) EDTA is converted to iron (II) EDTA (Fe 3+ EDTA + Ag + Br −→ Fe 2+ EDTA + AgBr) before fixing. Kodak also has a process variant which uses a higher concentration of bleach and a 4:00 bath time; but with process volumes declining, this variant has become uneconomical. [6] Note by the daylight, overcast line it says 7000k and by the cloudy day line it shows that the colour temperature can be as high as 8300 Kelvin. With Kodak E100 being daylight (5600k) balanced, no wonder I was getting such a blue shift from the parts of the day that were cloudy… KODAK PROFESSIONAL EKTACHROME Film E100 delivers extremely fine grain (rms 8), a low D-min for whiter, brighter whites, and features moderately enhanced color saturation with a neutral color balance and a low contrast tone scale. This film is designed for exposure with daylight or electronic flash.

Ektachrome, initially developed in the early 1940s, allowed professionals and amateurs alike to process their own films. It also made color reversal film more practical in larger formats, and the Kodachrome Professional film in sheet sizes was later discontinued. You'll want to listen to the discussion to really get the details of how the film is made, but here are a few of the most interesting tidbits about the revival process (for us anyway): Rinses, washes, stop baths and stabilizer/final rinse (the final step of the process) are not counted in the counting of baths when describing both the conventional six bath and hobbyist three bath processes. Calhoun, John (April 2006). "The ASC – American Cinematographer: Cop vs. Robber". American Cinematographer. American Society of Cinematographers . Retrieved June 29, 2013. But in the Ektachrome images I personally think are my best, it’s the depth that I’m most impressed by. The layers and separation between elements. Everything I’ve shot before on negative film seems a little flatter and more two-dimensional in comparison.

In doing that, the main problem I found after seeing the results was what it means to have the light just right when shooting. It’s not enough for it to just be a sunny day. Kodak Ektachrome E100 is a daylight balanced, ISO 100 colour positive film that was first released in 2018. When shot well, as we’ve already explored, it’s meant to give bright whites, moderately enhanced colours with a neutral balance, low contrast tone scale, and extremely fine grain. Don’t let it worry you too much though. Keep it simple and if the results are less than ideal, learn and adjust for next time.

But if you were worried that Kodak had given up on the idea, fear not: in a new episode of the Kodakery podcast, a few of Kodak's higher ups (including Marketing and Product Manager Diane Carroll-Yacoby) updated the world on the progress of the Ektachrome reboot, how they're making it, and what testing still stand between your hands and a fresh 36-shot roll of the stuff.
