Reading the play had a profound effect on me, and I can’t wait to see how that translates to a live experience, for the actors and audience alike. ” This is a very traditional musical and it’s easy to see how it could have been turned in to a film in the 1960s without any changes. It tells a cute enough story, has a great central performance and some fine support, but the staging is uninspired and the plot’s predictable. None of this would have been an issue with catchier songs that contained smarter lyrics concerning Mrs Harris’s plight and the working class world, but too many are frothy and light and almost instantly forgettable. Flowers For Mrs Harris is the story of Ada Harris, a char-lady in post-war London whose drab life of dusting and scrubbing is transformed when she glimpses a Christian Dior dress in one of her client’s wardrobes and sets her heart on going to Paris to buy one for herself.
