About this deal

Many paints and inks are compatible with Gelli printing. These include water-soluble printmaking inks and fabric paints. Textures will make the result more interesting. In a thin layer of paint on the plate, you can press stamps or stencils. Usually, you will be able to make 2 or 3 prints out of this: The gel printing plate is made of a unique plastic that contains mineral oil. The gel plate will leak a small amount of harmless mineral oil when left sitting on an absorbent surface.

A: Watercolor paints are not ideal for monoprinting, as their thin viscosity will bead up on the Gelli® plate. However, we have seen Gelli® prints done with watercolor with beautiful results. Gouache may be easier to work with. We suggest experimenting if you wish to use watercolors. Ask students to write poetry to go with their prints. Challenge them to add imagery to their print that communicates the meaning of their poem. Q: I noticed there are bubbles under the plastic sheets that cover the Gelli® plate. Is that a problem? Although I have a room full of craft supplies I never seem to have the paper I need. I'm a control freak so I like to match my papers to the theme, mood, colors and basically everything. There are lots of books out there on Gelli Plate Printing – This one has to be one of our favourites: Gelli Plate Printing: Mixed-Media Monoprinting Without a Press by Joan Bess.We then used a piece of bubble wrap that we had inked up with red acrylic paint. We used this bubble wrap to stamp onto the plate on top of the pink…

The gel printing plate may exude a small amount of harmless mineral oil when exposed to warm environments. This is normal and, when wiped off, will not affect printing performance. Throwing a ‘failed’ print in the bin. Since acrylic paint is opaque, adding another layer will make the print look different;TIP- You can adjust your design as needed (like adding more stamps to your picture), but remember that if you take to long the paint will dry! Here is the step by step process to print with a gel plate and make custom made papers and patterns.

In my room, we use Gelli plates. They are user-friendly and the possibilities really are endless. Of course, you can display the finished prints as-is, but you can also show students how to take their prints to the next level by adding layers with drawing and collage materials. These more advanced processes allow students to enhance their skills while intentionally promoting the creation of mixed-media artwork. Let’s dive into how to take Gelli plate monoprints to the next level. Step 1: Create Monoprints Many materials will work and create great prints however they might stain the plate. However staining will not affect the quality of printing and usually can be cleaned. YOU DON'T! You can make gel prints with any tool, paint and try any idea or technique - this is what gel printing is about. Discover, experiment and be creative!

Clean Up Gelli Printing

Provide your students with the usual suspects like glue and scissors, but also supply them with a wide array of materials such as kid-friendly magazines, yarn, sequins, construction paper, old books, fabric scraps, and newspapers. The more items they have to add to their prints, the more creative they will be. The girlplate is very soft so any sharp object can cause marks, dents, scratches or holes that can't be repaired! Take care when using any object to make prints to avoid damaging the gelli plate. Part of gelli plate art is the surprise element and the unexpected result. There might be a learning curve but with time and practice you'll be able to plan the result and control the process. Students can embellish or draw on their print or even just enhance patterns and designs created through the printing process. They can add text as well. Supply students with broad and thin line markers and Sharpies, oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, pencils, and any other drawing materials of your choice. While all of these materials are not necessary, it is good to have at minimum two options. If there is still paint on your gel plate after the first print is pulled, you can always place a second piece of paper onto the plate and repeat the press and pull process. These are called “ ghost prints” and sometimes the ghost prints can be just as every bit as beautiful and interesting as the original!
