About this deal

The sparkling drink is believed to have first been produced in the champagne region of France around 1700. It was historically served by royals and aristocrats in tribute or celebration. This tradition has happily survived to modern times, with other European regions offering their own bubbly alternatives. It's best to serve the special drink in a flute or coupe – it is the mark of any toast-worthy event, after all.

Here are the 10 best vintage expressions from the 2022 Champagne Masters, featuring single-harvest samples from 2008 to 2016 – including star performers from 2012 – all of which were Gold medallists or higher in the UK’s leading Champagne-only, professional blind-tasting competition. CHAMPAGNE JEAN-NOEL HATON, CUVÉE NOBLE, 2016 Moet and Chandon have recently designed a bottle sleeve for their Imperial Brut Champagne and branded it as Moet Golden. This was extremely popular in 2012 with people celebrating the Olympics. In fact Moet themselves supplied many bottles of Moet Golden to the Olympic authorities, which were then given away to Gold medal winners. Any sparkling wine labeled “Champagne” must be produced within Champagne, a geographical region in northeast France. However, certain sparkling wines produced elsewhere in the world may be produced using the Champagne method, in which the secondary fermentation, the step which creates the bubbles, takes place in each individual bottle. Regions producing bubblies made with the Champagne method include Italy (where it's known as metodo classico), Spain and Portugal ( método tradicional), California, Australia, and even regions of France outside of Champagne (where the method is known as méthode traditionnelle). Many other popular sparkling wines, such as Prosecco and Sekt, are made using less labor-intensive processes than the Champagne method. THE FIVE BEST GOLD EYESHADOW PALETTES

Many of the more high profile athletes were pictured drinking their bottle out and about around London. Moet produce their golden For all the challenges facing Champagne – from grape price inflation to better rival sparkling wines – it’s a category in rude health. And while it’s tempting to think that Champagne’s strength stems from big budget promotions, as anyone with a passing interest in marketing will tell you, the most important aspect for long-term sales success is a good product. In other words, Champagne’s growth, despite some significant recent price rises, and a much-improved competitive set, has occurred because this French fizz is better than ever. And, on the subject of ripeness, yes, this is a function of warmer vintages, but also of better control of grape health through improved viticulture, along with the more Champagne in three bottle sizes, regular 75cl, a magnum and the largest currently available Golden is the Jeroboam. We are not sure for how long Moet will produce the Gold sleeve so it is currently marked up as a limited edition but looks great and makes a fantastic gift. From here on in, keep the bottle pointed away from yourself and anyone present, especially people's faces – about a 45 degree angle is good.

A stunning example of 2012 vintage Champagne, the wine is mid-straw in hue with tiny persistent bubbles, plenty of griotte and apple flavours and fresh yeast autolysis leading to a concentrated and integrated palate with racy acidity and brittle mousse texture. A long, savoury, bready and complex wine that is an excellent match for rich, intricate dishes, even game birds with exotic sauces. (Patricia Stefanowicz MW) CHAMPAGNE HENRIOT MILLÉSIME 2012 In short, riper and cleaner base wines are yielding better cuvées, and this allows for lower dosages too, because you don’t need a lot of sugar to offset green notes – nor to mask unwanted flavours – if there aren’t any. Hence, the Champagne of today is fuller, but drier too. And, in my view, that’s a good place to be.That’s certainly my impression from more than a decade of blind tasting Champagne, and certainly after this year’s Champagne Masters. In 2023, I found myself handing out a higher proportion of top scores than in the past, as I repeatedly tasted cuvées with depth and precision, flavour intensity with balancing freshness – and, I’m pleased to say, little in the way of greenness.

This roundup was edited by Jesse Porter, who's worked as a sommelier for several excellent Champagne programs—and yet who finds it challenging to maintain a decent Champagne collection at home, as they tend to pair so nicely with pretty much any meal.

With your other hand, untwirl the cage fastening. Uncover your thumb, lift off the cage and replace your thumb over the cork. Of course, styles vary, and although my preference is for pristine fruit flavours allied to a nutty richness, I can see the quality in more oxidative styles, with their appealing notes of dried fruit and honey. Furthermore, while I like a certain creaminess in Champagne, I was surprised by the pleasure I took in the firmer feel of those producers who eschew malolactic fermentations: Lanson and Gosset in particular. Find out all the medallists from this year’s Champagne Masters, featuring a set of outstanding bottles, from blanc de blancs to prestige cuvées, and, in particular, a set of good-value, ready-to-drink vintage offerings, including one remarkable sample from 1999 – which has only just been released.
