About this deal

Getting a liter of water may require some time (not much though). If you want to filter more, you could easily spend a few minutes treating water instead of enjoying the outdoors. For extended trips or times when you’ll be setting up camp for at least a night, a gravity filter is an excellent way to get clean water without needing to put in much effort yourself. Just set up the filtration system, and let gravity do the work for you.

This Katadyn Filtration tool comes with an inlet hose that is thrown into the water source to draw water through the pump. O-Rings. I do not remember how many rings initially came with the filter, however, I carry these three with me at all times, and replenish from the local hardware store.Coffee Filters. The larger coffee filters, 12-cup size, will work best! I carry two filters for every day I expect to be on the trail… i.e., 3 days/6 filters. Gravity systems—which use an inline filter—are best for groups, basecamping, or anytime you want to filter large quantities of water with minimal hands-on effort. Simply fill the dirty water bag, hook up the filter to the port or hose, and let gravity do the work. Some gravity systems have a separate “clean” reservoir to collect the water, while others dispense it straight into your vessel (or mouth) via a hose with an on/off valve. But gravity filters aren’t for everyone: they’re bulkier and heavier than most alternatives, and you’ll need a fairly good water supply to fill up your reservoir (pumps are better for shallow sources). Finally, gravity filters aren’t our first choice for on-the-go water treatment, as setting up the system can take some time, and you’ll need somewhere to hang it (something to keep in mind if you're headed above treeline). The Platypus GravityWorks is our favorite gravity filter A water filter is one of the most important pieces of gear you can carry. Without water, your chances of surviving for any length of time are pretty small. Not having enough clean drinkable water prevents your body from carrying out its normal functions, and can lead to death in as little as three days (possibly much sooner in harsh desert environments). Note: The pico-sized o-ring found it's way in but I have no idea where, why and what it came from. So, there it remains, in case I figure it out.)

In addition to this, the inlet hose has a 130-micron pre-filter which prevents entry of larger sediments. Filter Longevity The simplicity of the TrailShot is what makes it so great; simply place the hose into your water source and begin pumping either into your water bottle or directly into your mouth! A lifesaving product like this needs to be built to last, and must be able to stand up to the harshest of environments. Hands down the Katadyn Microfilter has got to be the most durable, dependable and well-designed filter that I’ve ever tested. However, you won’t be able to carry any pre-filtered water with you and typically the filters aren’t replaceable meaning that these models have a much shorter lifespan. SizeWhether you’re just going on long weekend hikes or multi-month international trips, a portable water filter falls on the list of essential items for many travelers. Pumps are one of the oldest forms of water filters, and some people still prefer this method above the newer varieties. Katadyn has a good reputation for reliable water filters, and the Vario certainly stays in the competition for best water filters. If you begin to notice the taste of the water becoming poorer or the build-up of sediment in the filter, it’s probably time to change it. To keep the filter functioning for longer, the Vario comes with a lubricant and cleaning pad. Through a countless number of excursions into the wilderness, this filter has never once failed to deliver clean drinkable water. Its construction is top-notch and feels tougher, and more durable than any of the water filters that I’ve used over the years.

Water: a transparent, tasteless, odorless liquid!? Hmmm, think again. I, once, with little choice, filtered water from an abandoned cow trough full of the most nauseating putrescence I've ever encountered, the only possible water source available! It comes with a silver-impregnated ceramic filter (we will discuss in the next section) that can an impressive volume of 13000 gallons before needing replacement.I'm considering cutting the label from this case and employing a lighter case for storage and transport, possibly using a cuben fiber case? It’s worth touching on chemical filtration since these are the oldest (and some would argue most reliable) types of water purification. This filtration technique involves adding droplets of a chemical solution to your water, then waiting the proper amount of time before drinking. Everyone has a different comfort level for how much they carry with them. If you’re wanting a water filter for day trips or weekend hikes, something small and easily portable is more up your alley. In a survival situation, water is your number one priority. Do you really want to put your life in the hands of a cheap plastic filter? When choosing something as important as a water filter, this is one area where I refuse to settle for anything but the best. As compared to any other hiking filter, the microfilter is sturdy, rugged, and built to last. The filter derives its long-lasting feature from its moving parts, all of which are made of metal, as opposed to plastic in its peers.
