About this deal

If you can still see mites crawling out of crevices in the wood when the coop is drying, try hosing the coop and all loose parts down with a pressure washer. Leave to dry for 10-15 minutes and blast it over again to get rid of even more mites. Repeat until there are very few mites emerging after every wash. An easy way to tell if you have a red mite problem in your coop is to place a small square of white towelling material in the corner of your nest boxes or over the end of a perch. days later, spray the whole housing unit again with a 6% solution of Smite Professional and re-apply Smite Organic Powder or Spray to nesting areas, crevices and perches. This will treat any mite eggs which have hatched since the initial treatment. In severe infestations, the treatment should be repeated every 7-10 days until the infestation is under control. Application rate: 30 - 50 g/m 2: Dust hiding places and breeding grounds of vermin or apply dust barrier of approx. 5 - 10 g/running metre around roosting areas.

Red mites are generally nocturnal and usually feed at night when their victims are resting. Unlike fleas, they don’t necessarily live on the hens themselves, as there is the possibility that they could end up being the food rather than the feeder, instead they often retreat to safety during the daylight hours finding shelter in dark areas of the coop. If you own a coop with a tarpaulin covered roof, you will often find that the red mite lives in the gap between the tarpaulin and the wood.

Are there Red Mite in your Chicken House?

I’ve thought about having an Eglu for two years but this summer’s red mite infestation was too much. I hate using chemicals/insecticides around my hens so I took the plunge and I’m really pleased.” Sue In more temperate regions, where mother nature never helps you fight off the mites, you may need a stronger solution. Unfortunately, most chemical mite killers are also dangerous to other animals. The safest option is Permethrin. If you have diagnosed a red mite infestation in your wooden coop, there are a few things you can do to try to get rid of them. Start off by giving your coop a really deep clean. Strip the house down as much as possible to get into all corners, nooks and crannies, and scrub with warm water. You will need to replace any felt or fabric parts and carefully clean perches, feeders and drinkers and other loose objects in the coop. Make sure that you get rid of all bedding that might have been infested.

DE powder can also be placed in a cat litter tray with some dry soil so your hens can self-treat themselves to a spa day and enjoy a dust bath.Monitoring of endangered areas for early detection of an infestation is recommended. After successful control, the dust coating can be left in place, thus providing long-term prevention of reinfestation. In case of reinfestation, the application can be repeated. Repeat the whole cleaning process if there are still lots of mites in 5 to 7 days. You will find you might not need to spend as long on the washing as there won’t be as many mites.

When the new crop of birds has been introduced, or the original birds re-introduced, and the unit temperature has stabilised, spray the building and equipment with a 6% solution of Smite Professional. At one time it was thought that mite only tended to live in wooden structures, but they are now found on both plastic and metal – anywhere that is as near to their next meal as possible. Nowadays, they are also becoming increasingly common in battery cages, where they cause severe health problems and economic loss.It also increases the digestibility of your feed when added at 1-2%, so in time Red Mite Powder could help save you a lot of money on food! Furthermore, it can be used as a mineral supplement for all animals and birds.

Diatomaceous Earth powder works as the mites crawl through the dust to feed on the hens at night. The microscopically sharp shards that make up Diatomaceous Earth scratch the mite’s waxy shell without which they cannot retain water and so dehydrate and die. When the nest conditions are correct the mite larvae hatch 2-3 days after being laid. The time it takes for a mite to go from egg to adult is 7 days. This short cycle can cause Red Mite infestations to grow very rapidly. Even without a food source Red Mite can survive for as long as 8 months making them a very hardy pest. Completely spray the inside of the empty coop with Poultry Shield solution using a hand pump sprayer ensuring that hard to reach places like roof joints are well soaked. Do the same to all the parts you have removed including nest boxes, perches and any other fittings. Once soaked leave for an hour. They start off as very small greyish-white mites that swell up into red coloured mites after a feed and at their biggest are only 1mm so small numbers of them can be hard to spot unless you know what to look for. Poultry Shield comes in a concentrated form and so needs to be diluted 1 part concentrate to 9 parts water. Use it to clean in the following ways. Sometimes, the natural remedies just don’t cut it. I’ve never had an infestation so bad that my natural choices can’t fight it off, but I also live in the frozen north, where mites (who prefer warm spring and summer temperatures) tend to die off for 5 months out of the year.
