About this deal

The 3D audio world is moving fast, though, and another (bigger) worry for Atmos aficionados is the launch of DTS:X. This sound format looks like being a genuine rival, and many studios will surely support it on their Blu-ray titles. And the Pioneer VSX-930 doesn’t support it, and won’t be able to via firmware, either. The built-in Wi-Fi is dual band, supporting both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz frequency channels, for steady and uninterrupted streaming even of Hi-Res Audio files. Easily stream songs from compatible devices using the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology. This AV receiver features A2DP and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). Supported codecs include SBC and AAC.

Speaker binding posts are of a decent enough quality for a receiver at this price point. The VSX-930 is designed to be an affordable home theatre solution, as such there are no pre-outs for connection to external amplifiers. High-resolution goes beyond two channels, the VSX-930 flying the flag for multi-channel (up to 5.1) audio. There’s FLAC 24bit/96kHz support via USB, wireless and wired connection, while for stereo delivery, 24-bit/192kHz WAVs and FLACs, and DSD files up to 5.6mHz can be played via USB, or streamed. This AV Receiver includes the latest surround sound technology: Dolby Atmos. It allows you to place overhead speakers for a multi-layered, dynamic, and three-dimensional sound that is completely in sync with the screen view, providing total immersion with unprecedented sound localisation and movement. All home cinema amps are now expected to off er a sideline in music, and this one is up to the task of getting your feet tapping. There are plenty of DSP modes to play with. Ext Stereo feeds your two-channel sources to your entire array (even your height speakers), while Classical makes a decent fist of turning your room into a cavernous space, courtesy of a heavy reverb effect. I spun Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir on CD with this setting. It sounded weird, but not in a bad way. MCACC PRO analyses the sound field of your speakers and automatically adjusts their virtual size, level, distance and response, as well as the equaliser settings for an excellent audio response. MCACC PRO offers full support of the Dolby Atmos surround format. As a low-cost AV receiver, the VSX-930 gets a lot of things right. Dolby Atmos support is welcome, and this seven-channel design makes setup in that regard simple – just wire up your speakers and the receiver makes the magic happen. And there is magic here in the way it handles multichannel mixes with pin-sharp precision. But there are flies in the AV ointment, too. and one of Hollywood's trademark bass swells. Although you wouldn't want to use this bargain-priced receiver to drive power-hungry, largescale speakers or fill a cavernous cinema room, it has enough for its likely end user.

a multichannel amp with a built-in radio tuner. It's even more apt now, with modern AVRs accepting any wireless source you can think of. Pioneer's VSX-933 is a case in point. This leaves you with the rather unpalatable choice of either setting a crossover which is too high for your main speakers, or too low for your height speakers. That huge, open scale and muscular performance will appeal to many as well – it’s worth considering if you’re starting to build your home cinema system.

Dolby Atmos offers seamless surround sound movement in a three-dimensional space with a sense of height created by the overhead speakers. It will fill your room with astonishing clarity, richness, detail, and depth. If you’re new to setting up a complex system such as this, they have made this easy for all by including the latest version of their MCACC (Multi Channel Acoustic Calibration) Pro system microphone that pinpoints your exact position in the room and will setup the speakers to work for you in the most optimal way. Easy right? To say the Pioneer is well equipped is an understatement. And you can add user friendliness to its list of attributes too. A redesigned interface sees bigger tabs and bolder icons replacing the old listed menu format, making network and system settings easier to follow. As I mentioned before the problem has occurred on Bluray and now on Apple TV. The strange thing is that PS4 is running without any problems at all. Have never had any of this symptoms with it.

Trajectories also have greater accuracy as the turtles fly and cars topple through the air. Sounds in the extra headspace move fluidly with the ‘regular’ channels, and where the soundfield feels a little closed-in on a normal (Atmos-stripped) configuration, we’re now satisfied with how open it sounds. And while last year’s VSX-930 gained that all-important fifth star for its excellent performance, the new VSX-1131 can’t quite match that balance between power and subtlety that we’re so fond of in Pioneer’s SC-LX receivers. Practically identical in appearance to the VSX-930, the VSX-932 is housed in an aluminium chassis. The front panel has a brushed metal finish with a large LED display and is flanked by two large dials providing direct access to source selection and volume control. Two buttons on the Pioneer’s handset are key for system fiddlers – Audio P(arameter) and Video P(arameter). The former of these brings up a cyclable list of various features, and is where you can call up different saved MCACC presets, activate the Sound Retriever Function, select Standing Wave and Phase control, etc. One problem is that you’ll be reaching for the manual to find out what the various options do, and many that are listed in Pioneer’s literature disappear depending on source/mode. Lowering the subwoofer level from that set by MCACC gave me a better balance; beyond that I was happy to leave Pioneer's EQ left on. In truth, though, there wasn't a night/day difference.
