This book is about family and forgiveness. I really loved seeing all of the characters return from the first book. I also absolutely loved Rebekah’s journey. Her talk of recovery and learning to love herself was very uplifting. I also enjoyed her story with Nicholas. He is a very interesting character, and their interactions were my favorite parts of the book. The ending was everything I hoped it would be - and now I have to wait for book number three. I cannot wait to see where this coven goes. It’s a Tuesday in March and I have plans. I always have plans. It’s what I do, but these are particularly epic, even for me. Maybe if the ages were as reflected in their behavior and the romance was dialed down a tad and this was sold as a YA or older middle grade, it would be higher ranking.
Gilmore Girls townies meets The Good Witch meets Halloweentown II meets ???? This was too much and read very YA. The main character Emerson was so unlikeable, obnoxious, arrogant, irritating, "woke", anti-men, and very immature. She's 28 but sounds and acts very much 14 thinking she's grown. The petty drama was ridiculous to see. As she preps Main Street for an annual festival, Emerson notices strange things happening around St. Cyprian. Strange things that culminate in a showdown with her lifelong arch-rival, Mayor Skip Simon. He seems to have sent impossible, paranormal creatures after her. Creatures that Emerson dispatches with ease, though she has no idea how she’s done it. Is Skip Simon…a witch? Is Emerson? You learn or you die. Sometimes that death is long and drawn out and looks a lot like fear, but it’s death all the same. You learn so you can live.” Even before she had magic, Emerson would have done anything for St. Cyprian, but now she’ll have to risk not just her livelihood…but her life. But Zander is even more key to these town domination meetings thanks to his evenings at St. Cyprian’s townie bar. He always knows what the gossip is. And knowing what people in town think, and what they’re saying, makes it easier for me to do things that really are what’s best for them.

What kept making me crazy was that in the midst of all this her friends were just as over-protective and condescending as any of the adults assisting a young first-time magic user are in any of those stories from the 80s and 90s. The situation frustrated the hell out of Emerson, and I was right there with her.
