About this deal

Exposure is always dead-on. I almost never have to use any exposure compensation for perfect out-of-the-camera JPGs. While the A6700 does offer several notable upgrades over the A6400 such as improved autofocus, increased shooting speed and superior video capabilities, it might not be enough to warrant an upgrade for those who already own the A6400. The design of the body is pretty much unchanged when you compare it to the models that sit above and below it, except for a couple of little tweaks. The Sony A6400 has the exact same height and width as the A6500 but the depth is slightly less due to the slightly rounded-off hand grip. This shouldn't be an issue if you have small hands, but after a couple of hours of shooting, we wished there was a bit more body to hold on to. This camera doesn't have weather sealing but it is about 50g lighter than the A6500. My main complaint with this lens is that it isn’t as sharp as I’d expect for a mid range prime lens. It suffers at wider apertures and doesn’t get much sharper until you stop down a lot. There is room for improvement in the design. This screen is perhaps the A6400’s ‘killer’ feature. It flips up through a full 180 degrees so that you can see yourself while you’re filming yourself presenting to the camera. It’s also touch-sensitive, though it’s relatively small so you’re going to have to be quite precise when setting the focus point. Sony A6400 review: Build and handling

Also, the telephoto focal length of the Sony 50mm f/1.8 will create pleasing images that show proper proportions of faces in portraits. The Sony A6400 uses a 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with the same 425 PDAF points as the A6300 and A6500. Unlike those two models, the A6400 also has the same number of contrast detection autofocus points, which is how it's able to achieve a claimed autofocus speed of just 0.02 seconds. Even at the widest aperture, the image was very usable across the whole frame. The sharpness improves at f/2.8 and maximum sharpness is reached at f/4. I chose this as my favorite because of the focal length combined with the fast aperture. Over the past 8 years, I’ve shot with a lot of lenses but have honed in on the 35mm focal length. If you want the best quality from this camera you’re better off shooting raw files, and these came out very well in Adobe Camera Raw, which supports the A6400 already. Sony A6400 review: Lab tests The auto focus is fast and effective and with such a wide focal length, I almost never had issues with getting accurate focus. Don’t limit yourself to just the APS-C e-mount lenses for your Sony a6400 – FE lenses work great too. If you’re looking for a lens to shoot the stars with your Sony, I’d suggest a wide angle prime with an aperture more in the f/2 range, such as the excellent and affordable manual focus Rokinon 12mm f/2, reviewed here. A new optical design that includes one aspherical element contributes to consistently high resolution from the image centre right out to the edges, while two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively suppress chromatic aberration.

Three times faster in-camera USB charging. I measure 1,468 mA USB current input versus 480 mA input with older cameras.

More Sony E-Mount Cameras

I set 1/125 as the minimum shutter speed for people photos. At 1/60 and slower often you'll get some blur as people are talking and laughing. This autofocus system covers approximately 84% of the image area and is sensitive down to -2EV. It also boasts Sony’s already legendary Eye AF system, both in single-shot and continuous shooting mode, and Eye AF support for animals is due to be added in summer 2019. Arguably, it’s these ‘native’ lenses that usually perform the best, since they have been designed specifically for the cameras that share the same brand.
