About this deal

This is about the expected weight for a commuter helmet, but it is about a quarter-pound on your head heavier if you’re coming from a road or mountain bike helmet of equal pricing. It may not sound like much, but I felt a difference on longer commutes. I’m not on a motorcycle. I’m not even riding equestrian. I’m on my hog, an electric Orbea Katu-E. (Image: Alvin Holbrook/CyclingTips) Commuting with the Heritage The folks at Thousand have listened and the Heritage 2.0 features larger vents and more of them. The ventilation channels within the helmet are deeper and longer as well.

Folks make compromises all the time in the name of good looks. While there are compromises to be made with the Thousand Heritage helmet, its good looks and solid feature set outweigh them. Thousand Chapter is the newer, more expensive, and more advanced model. Among other improvements, Chapter helmets feature the MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) technology that protects your head from rotational impact. Should you suffer an accident, POC wants to ensure rescue services can reach you in a timely fashion. There’s an NFC chip which provides access to your medical ID from the twICEme app – important if you’re not conscious. Setting up is a bit of a faff, but so worth it. Despite not having huge vents, the helmet is pretty light, weighing in at 392g or 14oz. I almost forgot I was wearing it at times and sometimes ended up wearing it into the house before I realized.

The Chapter model is pretty similar in design to the Heritage series. The overall shape of the helmet is the same, but the straps, vents, and the visors are different. The big idea behind this helmet is that if you’re not a helmet fan, you can wear a helmet discretely. Also, there’s a small hatch with magnets on the bottom rear right side of the helmet on both the Heritage and Chapter models.

RESULT – YES you can get the right fit on the Heritage, but it’s still different compared to traditional helmets. The Chapter is much better in this regard.

Looking For A New Brand?

Thousand has also added a neat 50 lumens magnetic rear light attachment, which charges independently. We found this gave us 1-2 hours of additional visibility. With several large vents for ventilation at the front and side of the helmet (12 in total) we found it plenty breathable and weren’t too sweaty after an hour-long ride in 30-degree weather (with 72 per cent humidity). There’s also a gutter action brow pad to ensure sweat doesn’t run into your eyes. Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! This helmet has earned a 5-star safety rating from the influential Virginia Tech, which researches helmets with a view to reducing concussions. Compared to ratcheting cages, or bulky pads, we much prefer helmets that offer a rear fit dial. The Thousand Heritage 2.0 has one, and it’s easy to tighten (or loosen) to ensure a perfect fit. Info On Sizing And Fit

Thousand definitely has their own niche and they handle it nicely. There’s a strong story behind it, which is also what makes it work. The fit was perfect; to size, incredibly secure and didn’t budge during our tests on uneven terrain. There’s a pair of adjustable straps below the ears at the chin which aid with this, while the Roc Loc system enables easy adjustment of tension and height of the helmet. Overall, a real bargain that raises the bar for affordable off-road helmets. As with any good mountain bike helmet, it assumes you’ll be looking down a lot, so has a very high profile with excellent visibility. It has great aerodymanics and feels faster than many of the mountain bike helmets we tested, despite the additional protection near the temples and base of the skull. After the loss of her friend in a cycling-related accident, Gloria decided that something needs to change. She collaborated with her friends and started Thousand Helmets – a company that makes helmets that you actually want to wear.Riding a bike without a helmet requires a balance between fun and danger. Thousand wants to change this balance by offering helmets with greater functionality. On the other hand, the Chapter model has an integrated Dial Fit System for precise adjustments that you can make with one hand.

The story behind Thousand’s helmets is actually more complicated than you would expect at first. We all have those friends who don’t wear helmets because they think they look silly. Gloria’s friend was one of those people.

Build Your Monogram

An avid cyclist for a few decades now, she took to cycling during her late teen years — a time when she needed something to help boost her self-esteem and confidence. We felt reassured by the tail at the base of the skull, and the helmet offers a secure fit with little-to-no sliding. If you're right on the cusp of a medium/large helmet, for instance, wear the helmet at its tightest setting. Pros: Superb; secure fit; great design; 5-star safety rating; price-defying feature set Cons: Can get a little warm
