American Horror Story has always created villains and monsters that inspired sympathy. When you see that the monsters are more human than most people in the series, how can you hate them? Twisty was no different. I made the opening just big enough to slip on and off. While it restrict ankle movement, the slow gait it caused was perfect for the character. The shirt is a little long, with red ribbon at the end of the sleeves. Elastic 4" from bottom of the sleeve. There are three pom-poms on the front. Two red yarn, and a furry yellow one in the middle. Glue a small tuft of batting to the yellow one to simulate the tear.

Even after being falsely accused of being a pedophile, which cost him his job, Twisty's love of children inspired him to make toys for a local toy shop to sell. Unfortunately, his tainted reputation spread to the toy shop, and he was ostracized by the entire community. Due to the dwarfs at the freak show spreading the accusation, Twisty hates freaks. He also hates smoking, as it makes his throat burn. After his attempted suicide, Twisty's simple and child-like mind degraded into a delusional maniac, with a very lose grasp on reality. It may be due to brain damage from loss of blood and even lead poisoning from the bullets. Either way, twisty was willing to murder, kidnap, and try to brainwash children into loving him again. He was still simple, but retained an animalistic cunning, and was very good at evading the authorities and abducting people, all the while remaining undetected. He also held onto the opinion he was merely a good clown, and totally oblivious to the atrocities he caused, suggesting that he is completely insane. Twisty also was a good craftsman, making cages, and whirligigs. Twisty was literally dropped on his head as a baby, resulting in minor mental disability. He left Jupiter in 1943 to work as a clown with Rusty Westchester's Traveling Carnival. Jealous of his popularity, the carnival freaks (led by two cruel dwarfs) spread a lie that he was molesting children. He was no longer able to find work as a clown (though this didn't stop him from wearing the costume and makeup) and he returned to Jupiter to build novelties from garbage scrap. Circuses and carnivals don’t inspire fear. Well, under normal circumstances, they don’t. If you’re one of the millions terrified of clowns, circuses are your Kryptonite. And that was what American Horror Story did with their fourth season, Freakshow—the season centered around a group of “freaks” under the care of Elsa Mars. But the freaks weren’t what you should have been afraid of. Twisty the Clown was more frightening than anyone Elsa had in her circus.Twisty's attire consists of a scalp, a mask, long pants, a long sleeved shirt, a ruffled collar, gloves, and clown shoes. The creepy smile is a crucial part of the costume. The mouth runs ear to ear and from just below the cheekbone and nose down past the chin. There are ten teeth on the top and bottom row. I vacuum former this part of the mouth. The idea of this costume came from the hit show American Horror Story; Freak Show. In this season, there is a new, terrifying character named Twisty the Clown. My boyfriend [Ryan] insisted that he dress up as the clown for Halloween. I thought “Greaaattttttt.” Two problems: the show premiered October 8th so I knew this meant there wouldn’t be a mask or costume to buy and next, I’m absolutely terrified of clowns. This could be the challenge that breaks my fear, plus I love being creative. The clown was a bloodthirsty kidnapper and serial killer, though he did not know that his actions were wrong. His purported motivation (as he revealed to ghost Edward Mordrake) was to save children from their mean-spirited, chore-giving, candy-denying parents. Though some of his murders, like the toy store owner, were likely more personal and vengeful in nature.

Twisty's appearance undergoes a very drastic change during the course of the series. Initially, he was a classic Pierrot clown, with a full whiteface, with a big red nose, a white, baggy costume with red bits and 3 red pom-poms on the front, red lines running across his eyes, and a big red clown smile painted on his face. He was a bright and colorful clown who looked very sweet, huggable, and approachable. After his attempted suicide, he lost most of his lower jaw, and wore a marginally less terrifying prosthetic grinning mask across the damaged area of his face. Finally! The fourth season of American Horror Story starts this month on October 8 th. Ryan Murphy and his evil mind finally have brought the scariest thing in the entire world to primetime FX: murderous clowns. So, to keep our mind off of all the greasepaint, rubber shoes, and Twisty’s murder weapons, we put together some group costumes featuring the past three seasons of AHS. However, these characters are just as weird as Freak Show looks to be, so #WirSindAlleFreaks holds true for everyone. “We are all freaks.” Let’s play! When he returned to Jupiter, he learned his mother had died. To most, that would be a tragedy. But Twisty’s mother suffered from alcoholism, which caused her to drop him as a baby. He tried desperately to sell the toys he made at a local toy store. But the shop owner wasn’t interested. The disinterest caused Twisty to fly into a rage, realizing that the rumors from the carnival had followed him to Jupiter. Defeated, he tried to take his life with a shotgun. His attempt failed, and he ended up mangling his lower jaw. He started to wear a mask to hide the disfigured lower jaw. That was when he decided to keep children “safe” from their parents. His methods were gory and murderous, but he believed he was doing the right thing.In season 5, Hotel, John Wayne Gacy actually debuts on the show as a guest of the Hotel Cortez, portrayed by John Carroll Lynch, who also portrayed Twisty. One scene in particular shows him dressed as a clown, brandishing a knife with which to murder a victim on Devil's Night. Alright, Freak Show comes out today so we had to use our imagination with this one since we haven’t seen it yet! (However, Ryan Murphy, if you would ever like to give pre-screening copies of upcoming episodes to HalloweenCostumes.com, we won’t turn them away.) So, we went with a creepy circus vibe. We do know that Angela Basset has three breasts in this season, but we’ve already done that costume. I started with the sole and worked from there. I glued the shoe to the sole, then glued strips around the shoe. The heel is one piece, and the toe another. Next, I put down a couple more layers of only liquid latex on top to keep everything together. All of the materials held up great! After all was dry, I painted the mask with acrylic paint. His attire was found at local thrift stores and the clown accessories were sewn on.

Scissors - I did use them for smaller cuts. You can use pinking shears to prevent fraying. I should have done this! Alternatively you could start with a dollar store plastic mask and clay over it or use craft foam for the mask. Or foam over the plastic mask.I created the pom-poms with red yarn. I wrapped it around a DVD case the full length twice over. I then tied a knot through the middle of the loop with the ends of yarn. Cut the loops at one end and you've got the pom pom. Large roll of 36" wide paper - This is for sewing templates and as a table cloth to protect working surfaces. Strangely enough, Dandy Mott's mother still assumed he did private children's parties, and hired him to entertain Dandy, despite his grotesque appearance. This may have been done to scare Dandy, as a passive-aggressive act of revenge on her part, yet Dandy was totally unafraid of him due to his own emotional instability. White thread - For stitching the shirt, pants, and collar. I think I used 5 or 6 spools, but I lost count. I sewed 1/4" elastic 6" above the bottom of the pant leg. Measure the max circumference of your elastic and start there. Then stretch it out to sew it to the pant leg. I made the unstreched elastic just a big bigger than my leg. I don't want a tight fit.
