About this deal

Volt is bus powered when connected to a USB port that supplies adequate power. You can use the 5VDC connector to connect to power when required (for example, if you want to reduce power drain on an iPad or laptop, or if the USB port or hub is not able to provide enough power). I was sent a Volt 2 and a Volt 276 for review, and having both side by side made it apparent that the latter’s layout has ergonomic as well as cosmetic benefits. There’s nothing wrong with the Volt 2’s front panel, but it’s definitely more convenient to have the controls on the top, and the extra space has allowed UA to fit five‑segment LED meters on the 76 where the 1 and 2 make do with two. The 76’s larger knobs also allow levels to be set more precisely, which is important for a couple of reasons. One is that, like many designs, the Volt preamp circuit exhibits some gain bunching, in this case around the central position. The other is that there’s no threshold parameter for the 76 compressor, so accurate adjustment of the gain control is needed to control the amount of compression you want. With direct monitoring, you hear the input signals directly from the Volt hardware with no delay or latency, bypassing your audio software’s buffers

The iPad Pro can provide enough juice to power Volt 1/2/176/276 for truly portable location recording/production. A microphone is typically connected with an XLR connector, and an instrument or line level signal is connected with a ¼” (6.35 mm) TS or TRS plug. If bus power is insufficient, connect Volt to external 5VDC power to compensate for the underpowered USB port.

You can connect a MIDI device to Volt with standard 5-pin MIDI DIN cables. Connect the MIDI OUT of your device to the MIDI IN on Volt, and the MIDI IN of the device to the MIDI OUT on Volt. Use TRS (balanced) audio cables for the best results with balanced audio sources. Balanced equipment uses three conductor wiring (via TRS or XLR connectors) to reduce interference and electrical noise, and to provide better audio quality over longer cable runs. Use TS (unbalanced) cables for instruments that are not balanced, such as an electric guitar or bass, or an unbalanced synth or sound module. TS connections may also be suitable for shorter input cables, where electrical interference noise may not be an issue. a b "Complete UK Year-End Album Charts". The red input LED lights when the input signal is near 0 dB.

Press this button to toggle 48V phantom power at the XLR microphone input. The LED blinks red while phantom power is activating or powering off. The LED is lit solid red when phantom power is active. When using your Volt for field-based recording or “on-location”, you can make your setup even easier to transport due to its compatibility with iOS Smart Devices. You can use the high-quality sound-recording capabilities of Volt with your iPhone, iPad or iPad Pro.

When using an iPhone or iPad, simply plug the 5.5mm DC Barrel to USB Type-A cable (included) into the wall plug part of your phone/tablet charger (Volt 1/2/176/276 can use any 5V 1amp external USB PSU*). Then you can use full Volt features and run 2 channels of 48V phantom with iOS Garageband and similar iOS audio recording apps. For example, a MIDI controller might only be connected to the MIDI IN on Volt, and a MIDI sound module might only be connected to the MIDI OUT from Volt. (14) USB-CVolt are compatible with either Mac, PC and iOS devices (Apple Camera Connection Kit sold separately) and each comes with a USB-C to USB-A cable. There is no need to worry about opening the box to find you can’t use your shiny new interface! Phantom power is required by most condenser microphones, but is usually not required with dynamic microphones or ribbon microphones (phantom power can damage some ribbon microphones).
