About this deal

Hello everyone, though I’d end this post as the info might be useful to someone with same or similar problem! – I swapped the whale pressure switch over with a new one that the dealer had sent to me in the post and tested it on my driveway but to no avail - pump continuously ran no matter what I did and adjustment of the pressure switch as before it was no good. I will also make sure that the hose is not pulling on the connection as this may also deform the connection housing enough to open a potential air leakage point past the seals.

instead of on the taps have a micro switch on a pressure device that controls the operation of the pump by sensing a drop in pressure when the taps turned on, Most Ultrastore heaters have a water capacity of 10 litres, although a 14-litre version is available. Early models had an element of just 450 watts and took 70 minutes to heat up on electricity only. Over the years Truma upped the power in stages. It now comes with a switchable 850/1300 watt element, reducing the time to 29 minutes, or just 16 minutes if you use gas too. Most caravan pump systems will from time to time exhibit the effect you describe. This is not exceptional and does not represent a fault. Thanks Derek. Have saved a copy of that exploded view for future reference. Suspect this might not be the last issue I have with the pressure switch. However, as Adria has chosen to fit the pesky Whale Pressure Switch that has its own NRV, there should be no imperative need for another NRV at or near the pump. You do not tell us which Adria model of van you have or the type or make of pump that's fitted, but I believe its most likely a Truma submersible pump. This means you have a separate pressure switch fitted inside the caravan. Hot and cold running water is something we take for granted in a caravan – until, perhaps, something goes wrong. Here we look at the technology behind the tap and advise you on how to get the best from your caravan water system. Most of us are familiar with the submersible pumps that sit inside an external water container, such as an Aquaroll ( available at Halfords, Millets and Argos) and pump the water on board. They use a small 12-volt motor to drive an impellor at high speed, forcing the water through the delivery pipe and into the caravan. however there is a complication, and that is without some sort of device to cut power to the pump it will continue to run endlessly, and in a short time the pump would fail.

Conversely, if you go off-grid the first time and then you have hook-up the next, a pulsating pump its likely, as the voltage is probably higher than when you were relying on 12V battery power alone (when the charger and/or solar panel are working on our caravan, a charge of 13.7V is often displayed). My immediate thought was that I must have a leak somewhere caused by a frozen pipe over the winter. But I took particular care to drain the system of water using a Floe draindown attachment and also driving the vehicle around with the drain valves open for a while to release any dregs of fluid. For the 2012 model year, Coachman chose a more modern unit, the TrumaCombi 4E, for their Amara, Pastiche and VIP ranges. It was the first time a company had specified a Trum aCombi unit for a UK-built caravan. Since then, the cost and weight savings of having a single unit over two separate ones means Bailey, Lunar and Swift fit the Combi fitted to their touring caravans. Turn on each cold tap individually and ensure that the pump turns on when you open the tap and off again when you close it.You might find another pump may not exhibit the same oscillation. Even pumps of the same model will have slight differences in performance which might be just enough to prevent your problem. Today, Alde's boilers use the same principle and are at the forefront of efficient design. They have mushroomed in popularity over the last few years. First of all, I have asked Whale Support for assistance but at the time of writing they have not responded,. This is probably due to Covid 19. I then decided meanwhile I would ask the forum. so here goes. You wont do any damage if you try adjusting the pressure switch a little above or below the manufactures recommended settings, this might cure the problem, but do ensure the pump does actually turn off and not just sits there spinning without moving any water - that will shorten the pumps working life quite dramatically. I'll take a more detailed look when I get home and maybe swap it out with the new pump. If that resolves the problem then I'll see if it's possible to disassemble it and fix it and it can become my spare pump.

Several companies make electrically-driven diaphragm pumps for caravans. One of the most common in the UK is the Flojet, supplied by Truma. Swift Group fits them in a variety of their caravans. One of the problems of using pressure switches with submersible pumps is that the delivery pressure is very dependent on the battery voltage. If you're off-grid, this can slowly decay to the point where you have to adjust the pressure switch. To eliminate this potential issue Whale and Truma each developed intelligent pressure switches that effectively do the adjustment for you (see panel).

Camping Coolers

There are two types; ones that just heat water, and combined units that also provide space heating.

How close to the correct pressure setting you want depends on the individual but with a bit of time and slow carful adjustment a perfect setting can be achieved. Also when I run the pump there's no air coming out of the taps (at least not yet) which I would have expected with any sort of leak in the pipes. The Whale damper is quite ‘cheap and cheerful’ (though not exactly cheap) with no pressure adjustment. As mentioned in this 2013 Caravantallk thread Truma's Ultrastore water heater replaced the Cascade, which itself had been around for some years. You will find the Ultrastore on many UK caravans made between 2001 up to 2013. Although still in production, it has now been largely superseded by Truma' s Combi heater, which also provides ‘space heating’.I am interested in finding out more about the NRV and the boiler, for which both are difficult to get to as they are under a part of the seating that is fixed down. The simplest solution is to build switches into each tap. Of necessity, the switches need to be small and so the makers use microswitches. In time the constant switching of the pump current (2-4 amps) can cause microswitches to fail. If this happens, a workaround is to go to another tap and turn it on just enough for its microswitch to operate.
