About this deal

The second element is to set up the cellular features. In the UK version, we were provided with a nano SIM card from network Giffgaff, which is bundled in and is slipped into the Sim card compartment on the watch. It did also require being topped up to activate and get things up and running. EE is part of BT’s Consumer business unit which provides products and services to all of BT’s consumer customers in the UK.

The 3G network has been switched off in Germany. This means that all the 3G devices: Xplora 1 and Xplora Care, will no longer work properly. We recommend buying our most recent models: XGO3 and X6Play. They all connect to the 4G network offering therefore much better connectivity. Overall, we've been really impressed by this smartwatch, which is designed for kids 4-11 but really comes into its own with kids 8 and older, who will be able to use it as a phone, too. Stay active – The X5 Play encourages kids to be more active. It includes a step counter, rewards for every 1,000 steps taken, and interactive gamification experiences, including the integration with Dora and the Lost City of Gold on the Goplay platform. Thank you for choosing Xplora. We hope that you and your child enjoy this new and more exciting way of exploring the world. The following guide will show you how to set up your X5 Play. Important: We cannot guarantee the compatibility of different providers, even if they use the same network of those listed below. The watch includes a step counter which rewards you for every 1,000 steps taken, by converting steps into virtual Xcoins and badges. EE has partnered with children’s smartwatch manufacturer Xplora, to offer the X5 Play. The launch comes as a new survey reveals that nearly two thirds (59%) of UK parents feel their children have become less physically active since the start of the pandemic. If you’re not sure where to start when buying the best kids’ smartwatch or you want to know more about which features to look out for, we’ve outlined the most important criteria to consider. Durability and design Madison liked the fact that there is 4GB of onboard storage on XPlay 5. This gave her the ability to take and store pictures and videos.

In terms of the device itself, the watch is really well-built. When I first unboxed it and showed my wife, her response was that this seems like it could be a watch for a grown-up. The fit and finish of the plastic materials used for the casing are all very well done. It comes with a pre-installed screen protector covering the Gorilla Glass display with a small cutout for the front-facing camera. There is a speaker onboard that's primary purpose is to handle calls and it wasn't long before voice messages were getting sent. Call quality was clear though isn't going to rival the clarity you'd get on a smartphone. Stay curious – The X5 Play encourages children to explore their environment and record their adventures with a 2MP camera that stores up to a thousand pictures on the device. It can happen that you can call and make calls but cannot use all the other features that depend on mobile data, or the other way around. For instance, if you are a guardian, you won’t be able to see your child’s position and the changes made on the parental app won’t be reflected on the watch, then there is a good chance your provider’s APN settings are not recognised by the watch.

Specifications – Display: 1.33in colour touchscreen; GPS: Yes; Battery life: 1 day; Colours: Blue, grey and pink; Waterproof: IP54; Recommended ages: 5+ Stay safer – The X5 Play uses GPS in combination with GSM and WIFI triangulation to keep parents informed where their children are at all times. Additionally, parents can easily set up safe zones via a Google Maps integration, and they will be alerted when their children enter or leave the safe zones.

By setting up S-Zones in the app, I can be notified when my son leaves school on the bus to head home and also when he's arrived home. I really like the hardware on the Xplora X5 Play, but the software side of the pair isn't complete. We can vouch that it does effectively encourage kids to want to walk more so they can amp up their step count - ours were running around the house to get their step count up, and begging to go on extra walks outside. Because the watch uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular to determine its location, I found the results generally accurate. However, it would report the watch to be nowhere near its actual location from time to time. This is likely attributed to the X5 Play pinging location from the cell tower it was connected to rather than using the GPS. After a refresh, it would usually show the correct location. The device launch comes as research reveals majority of UK parents plan to support their kids becoming more active as restrictions ease and 2-in-3 say a connected smartwatch would make them feel more comfortable - allowing them to stay in touch as their children pursue new activities

It's a screen that offers good colour and brightness and it was largely a responsive screen to use. It was a bit of a struggle with grubby hands, but it worked well on the whole. There's a screen protector that sits on top of the screen that doesn't feel like the greatest quality and it ended up getting peeled off after a few week's of use.
