The pentagram symbol has prehistoric origins. And Solomon used it in the bible. It equally stands for the victory of spirit over matter. Different individuals used it with each of them giving it different meanings. Later in the 19th century, the name of Baphomet became further associated with the occult. Éliphas Lévi published Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie ("Dogma and Rituals of High Magic") as two volumes ( Dogme 1854, Rituel 1856), in which he included an image he had drawn himself, which he described as Baphomet and "The Sabbatic Goat", showing a winged humanoid goat with a pair of breasts and a torch on its head between its horns (see the illustration). This image has become the best-known representation of Baphomet. Lévi considered the Baphomet to be a depiction of the absolute in symbolic form and explicated in detail his symbolism in the drawing that served as the frontispiece: An ancient symbol of a unicursal five-pointed star circumscribed by a circle with many meanings, including but not limited to, the five wounds of Christ and the five elements (earth, fire, water, air, and soul). This is partially due to the similarity in appearance between the two – Banebdjedet is often portrayed as a ram god – which would have made if fairly easy to transform him into a goat. Additionally, Banebdjedet is known to be a god that was often sought out for his wisdom – a trait that Baphomet would inherit several centuries later. Baphomet is Remade in the 19th Century

Therefore, Baphomet is seen as the Redeemer, Christ, Logos, or Word of the New Aeon. Of course, we do not believe that Baphomet died for our sins but, rather, Baphomet is an image of our own Perfected Self, the glyph of arcane perfection, the complete Magician who has united male and female, Earth and Heaven, into a single, flawless Pyramid. It might be added that, in addition, the rubric of Liber XV has exactly 8 sections as does the Creed of the Mass. And there is a voice: thou knowest not how the Seven was united with the Four; much less then canst thou understand the marriage of the Eight and the Three. Yet there is a word wherein these are made one, and therein is contained the Mystery that thou seekest, concerning the rending asunder of the veil of my Mother.” Alternatively, it's been suggested that the absence of a symbol in the upper left (with the first syllable of Tetragrammaton) might represent spirit.

In describing the graphic, de Guaita only slightly expands on Lévi and says nothing about Samael, Lilith, or Leviathan. The Church of Satan did file for (1981) and then received (1983) a trademark which protects the use of the Sigil of Baphomet with the words “Church of Satan.” The Church of Satan therefore has the legal right to place the ® symbol meaning “registered trademark” next to this combination of symbol and words. This trademark also prohibits anyone from using something similar in combination of name and symbol, which could constitute an illegal dilution or blurring of the trademark.
