The EZ Read Jamar Goniometer is a manual medical goniometer designed to measure range of motion and dexterity in small joints. The simple design enables easy patient measurements. Use to measure range of motion, movement improvements, and dysfunction in patients. The EZ Read Jamar Goniometer is excellent for patients that have difficulties bending and flexing joints and are participating in a rehab and recovery program. Stat Med. 1998, 17: 101-110. 10.1002/(SICI)1097-0258(19980115)17:1<101::AID-SIM727>3.0.CO;2-E. The main attention in this investigation was directed towards calculating intra-rater and inter-rater ICCs and SEMs in the study parts A. The other components of the study were designed as pilot investigations. Balanced numbers of subjects and raters were planned to ensure synchrony of the evaluation sessions. Ten raters were expected to perform 2 repeated measurements (trial 1, trial 2) of the same joint in the same position with the same instrument, which summed up to 20 observations per subject. The ICCs were expected to reach 0.9. However, taking into account the conventionally acceptable lowest ICC values [ 38], reliabilities of 0.7-0.75 could also be considered as adequate for non-professional raters. Using an earlier proposed formula [ 48] with the above values and the recommended levels of α=0.05 and β=0.2 resulted in sample sizes between 8 and 12 (Additional file 4). In the replicate study parts A, the subjects used their individual try-angle sets at the 10 evaluation stations (Figure 1, Additional file 2). The values of the angles of individual try-angles were randomly distributed across the finger joints and across the subjects. The angles of the individual try-angles of the same subject were of different magnitude, and none of the subjects had the same combination of the angle magnitudes (Additional file 3). Raters of the study parts A had to obtain twice the MCP, PIP, and DIP joint angles in each of the two positions (flexion and extension) by using both goniometers (Additional file 2) .Groth GN, VanDeven KM, Phillips EC, Ehretsman RL: Goniometry of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, Part II: placement preferences, interrater reliability, and concurrent validity. Milanese S et al. Reliability and concurrent validity of knee angle measurement: Smart phone app versus universal goniometer used by experienced and novice clinicians. Manual Therapy, 2014; 5: 1–6. The inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of the electrogoniometer is higher than the universal goniometer but challenging to apply in patients' clinical evaluation, hence used more often for research purposes [1] The long arm goniometers are more accurate for joints with long levers like the knee and hip joints. So overall greater reliability is obtained when measures are taken by the same therapist, using a standardised method with the same measurement tool assessed at the same time of day. Smith et al specifically studied the use of photograph goniometry in the patient with Dupuytren disease and similarly found a high Pearson correlation coefficient (0.88) compared with manual goniometry and a high ICC (0.92) across different observers for the photograph measurements. 3 However, in that study the MP joints were excluded, all photographs were taken by physicians, and photographs were taken using a digital camera rather than a smartphone. Our study overcomes difficulty in visualizing the MP joint contractures by utilizing the straight edge of a pen in each image as a reference guide for angle measurement. In addition, this study compares photographs taken by professionals and those taken by untrained individuals such as patient family members and friends, allowing for a more realistic proxy for photographs obtained in a physically remote setting. Georgeu et al also tested photograph goniometry of the fingers and achieved a 1° difference between photograph goniometry and manual goniometry. 13 However, that study utilized a custom-made jig for uniform hand placement, a procedure too cumbersome and impractical for use in a busy clinic or telemedicine setting. Boone, D. C., Azen, S. P., Lin, C., Spence, C., Baron, C., & Lee, L. (1978). Reliability of goniometric measurements. Physical Therapy, 58(11), 1355-1360. The smartphone is an increasingly pervasive tool that could add value in a hand surgeon’s clinic. Because clinical treatment decisions and follow-up examinations for certain disease processes are based primarily on ROM measurements, the use of smartphone photography goniometry is an attractive method for incorporating telemedicine into a hand surgeon’s practice. Smartphone photography goniometry may also decrease economic costs and increase access to care for both patients and providers. 22, 23 Specifically in the case of the patient with Dupuytren disease, initial visits and subsequent long-term follow-up without the need for surgical intervention could all be conducted via the remote transfer of a smartphone photograph, thus eliminating patient travel costs, reducing clinic load, and increasing the availability of care. Long-term follow-up of patients could also be more consistent, as the barriers to follow-up are dramatically diminished.

Wireless Twin-Axis Electronic Goniometers provide the freedom of unrestricted movement, a key feature when studying natural, dynamic joint movements in real-world environments. Our wireless DataLITE technology eliminates the need for cumbersome cables, providing a hassle-free, unobtrusive experience for the user. The wireless transmission is robust and can transmit data up to a range of 30 meters, ensuring you have the flexibility and freedom to move without the concern of data loss. In the replicate study parts A, 2x2x10 (trial x goniometer x rater) and 2x10 (goniometer x rater) repeated measures ANOVAs were run for each position-joint and trial-position–joint data set, respectively, to assess the main effects and interactions of goniometer, trial, and rater. The sphericity assumption was tested by using Mauchly’s test with appropriate epsilon adjustments. The procedure protocol also included relaxation of the subject’s hand between the measurements and short breaks between the evaluation sessions. As the length of the evaluation sessions differed from rater to rater, the intervals between sessions also varied. The participants were free to choose longer brakes if they felt tired. Ideal for measuring cervical rotation, anteroposterior flexion, and lateral flexion of the cervical spine. In evaluating any new method of ROM measurement, accuracy is crucial, but the method must also remain easily accessible to patients and clinicians. Recent advances in smartphone photography have introduced a new ubiquitous platform for photo goniometry. With nearly two-thirds of Americans owning a smartphone, 6 the cameras on these devices would easily allow patients to remotely send images and videos to physicians for clinical evaluation. Smartphone photography has the potential to facilitate telemedicine, increasing patient access and simplifying long-term follow-up. However, smartphone goniometry has yet to be validated for ROM measurements in the digits.Kottner J, Audigé L, Brorson S, Donner A, Gajewski BJ, Hróbjartsson A, Roberts C, Shoukri M, Streiner DL: Guidelines for Reporting Reliability and Agreement Studies (GRRAS) were proposed.
