About this deal

Leatherman and Gerber multi-tools span a range of prices to accommodate different budgets. Leatherman tools generally tend to be higher priced due to their premium materials and craftsmanship. Gerber offers multi-tools at various price points, including more affordable options. Consider your budget and the specific features you require to make an informed decision. Multiple drivers stand out with the EDT with three hex drivers of varying sizes, starting at a quarter inch and going up. 5.11 Tactical EDT

NUNQUAM NON PARATUS · April 24, 2019 If you are the parent of a young child, I strongly recommend you consider carrying the Victorinox Manager. Especially if you don't like to carry around a lot of extra bulk/weight, but constantly find yourself searching for the right tool while a kid is crying in your ear. Here is what you get, and why I think it is the perfect minimalist multitool, specifically for parents: The Wave Plus wasn’t without its minor qualms. The nylon sheath felt a little on the cheaper side, and I did find the ‘one-handed open internal tools’ to usually require a bit of a struggle, demanding both hands more often than not. Like the Mullet, stripping and cutting wire was difficult. The effort required to strip a wire is substantial.

Overall the Gerber Dime just beats out the Squirt PS4. They’re both great multi tools, but the Dime has slightly better tools and overall design. The Leatherman Squirt product picture

We think Gerber beats out Leatherman in this category. Folding knives are the companies bread and butter, they’re just more experienced that Leatherman and produced an overall better product. The Gerber Obsidian product picture Stripping wires also proved a cinch. The center of the pry bar was quite sharp and cut right through the wire coating – stripped just like Chris Farley in that Chippendales sketch. (Kids, go ask your parents what that joke means…) Other tools are small but well chosen, and all are inside-access only (so the tool must be unfolded to access them.) One handle holds a medium Flat/Philips driver, a pair of tweezers, and a bottle opener/small screw driver. The other handle has a small clip point blade in 420HC, a medium straight screwdriver, and a nail file/nail cleaner. There’s also ruler demarcations on the handle if you need to measure something shorter than 4.7” long. The handle with the tweezers has a built in keyring loop with a small split ring to mount to your keys. The tool set on the Micra is more similar to a Swiss Army knife than to a typical Leatherman product, but they’re all useful things for day to day life, and the whole tool takes up very little space when folded. The Gerber Gear Shard Keychain Tool is a nifty little multi-tool that’s great to have while jet-setting around the world. We’ve been testing our Gerber Shard for two years now, and have used it on everything from tightening chairs at Airbnbs to popping off bottle caps. Gerber Shard Key Ring Overall this is a fairly nice tool with a few unique features you won’t find on other tools. The spoke wrenches in particular would be very helpful for cyclists. Finally, the K.E.R.T. houses a flathead screwdriver of moderate size. It seems to fit most flat head screws. CRKT KERT Leatherman wins this one by a pretty big margin. The Crucial just doesn’t feel as put together as the Skeletool. The screwdrivers don’t work as well as the interchangeable bits on the Skeletool and both the pliers and knife are less useful. The final nail in the coffin was its odd shape. We found it to be much less comfortable to hold and use than the Leatherman Skeletool. The Leatherman Skeletool product picture

The Gerber Shard consists of seven different tools in one: a pry bar, small flathead driver, wire stripper, larger flathead driver, bottle opener, lanyard hole, and Philips head (or cross driver, as the folks at Gerber refer to it as). And, despite its small size, it excels at doing all of these (although, is lanyard hole really a feature something can excel at?). Gerber Shard In Detroit Leatherman invented the multi tool as we know it today. As a company, they only produce multi tools. They have a laser focus on creating the best designs and manufacturing them using the best techniques. Pretty much across the board Leatherman products are better made than any other manufacturer’s at the same price point. The Shard has a distinctively tactical look, and I haven’t seen another one-piece multi-tool that looks anything like the Shard. It almost feels like something that Batman would use (remember the Batarang?). Ahh, multitools are so boring these days. They all offer the same basic functionality. Oh, this one has a set of pliers! This one has scissors. Oh wow, look, a pry bar. Blah blah blah. How about a multitool you can eat your breakfast with?Yes, it works for installing batteries into toys, but it’s not great for the average Phillip’s head I run across in my day-to-day. Plus, it’s small. The Wave Plus, with its rugged yet compact design, has now become a mainstay in my outdoor adventures. Whether it’s setting up a camp, fixing a loose screw on my gear, or slicing through a catch of the day, this multi-tool has proven its mettle. It’s not just a multi-tool; it’s a reliable companion that every outdoor enthusiast should consider.
