Ilford HP5 is also very forgiving of exposure, so you will get great results in a variety of difficult light and contrast situations. Medium format is being digital camera scanned and Fujifilm RAFs (in my case) imported into Capture one as well. A bit more massaging is needed here as first the curve conversion needs to be done before applying the other adjustments as outlined above. Colour is a whole different animal. I am using the Analog Toolbox add-on to Capture One for white balance and the initial RGB channel conversion. The best developers for pulling HP5+ are Perceptol, and Ilfosol 3. Perceptol is a renowned fine-grain developer for pulling film. Ilfosol 3 is the perfect choice for maintaining image contrast and tonality across a pulled negative. HP and FP were refined and updated over the decades that followed, becoming HP2 and FP2, then HP3 and FP3. The product line was expanded to include cine film, aerial film and yes, more of those plates. Nominally rated at ISO 400. Ilford HP5 Plus 35mm film will give you negatives with outstanding sharpness and fine grain under most lighting conditions.

I think I overcompensated a little, and most of the results from this roll are entirely blown out. These were developed in 600mlwater/15ml rodinal with strong agitation across the first minutes, a bit more agitation in the middle stage, but the rest as before. Very little nuance in the highlights, and compressed dynamic range overall. The grain was less predictable than the Delta 400, which I think I preferred overall. Expired HP5+ This not only means you can shoot scenes with both bright and dark areas, but also that the film can help you out if you do under or overexpose. As an ISO 400 film, you get plenty of leeway in both directions. There have been so many times that I’ve wanted to take my camera along with me for evening walks or to go hang out with friends, but all I’ve got on the shelf is a bunch of HP5. At ISO 400, it’s good for daytime or golden hour, but it’s not fast enough to handhold when the light fades. The good news is there’s no film out there that can’t be pushed, but how far can you really push an ISO 400 film before it just looks bad? With this in mind I have been looking for excuses to use my film cameras and all the lovely rolls of Ilford HP5 I have bought over the last year or so. Hence I have come up with a project to photograph some of the bridges over the River Thames near to where I live using a maximum of one roll for one day’s shooting. As with Tri-X, HP5+’s grain is present, yet not overwhelming . It neither muddies the image nor takes away from fine detail.
