About this deal

Bruns started a company, Hyprskn, a few years ago, when Bang Bang came across his work and suggested they team up. We're getting pretty close to revealing the first body art tattoos that have been made with Magic Ink," Bruns said. "Within the next three to six months, I think you'll start seeing a lot of images come out of the body art that's been made with this ink... It's really a dream come true for me to know that really talented artists are using this invention that we created in our lab.”

The spraying with the aqueous ammonia has a predictable effect on the phenolphthalein writing, and causes the pale blue hexaaquacopper(II) ions to form the intensely blue tetraamminediaquacopper(II) ions: Swierk said many of the tattoo pigments in use now have been around a long time, which gives some users a base comfort level about their safety. But a new material comes with new unknowns. Characters written in fresh milk are a well-known means of secret communication. Touch them with a little powdered charcoal and you will read them.” Magic Color Liquid Acrylic colours have been selected by artists and illustrators for many years for their versatility and ease of use.All ages can take part in this activity but at different levels since the aim is to gain some understanding of the thinking of the scientist and artist with regard to the properties of materials. It links with: Phenolphthalein indicator solution (HIGHLY FLAMMABLE) – see CLEAPSS Hazcard HC032and CLEAPSSRecipe Book RB000. The spraying of potassium iodide with aqueous lead(II) nitrate involves the precipitation of bright yellow lead(II) iodide: Many of them work as pH indicators, so when in doubt, paint or spray a suspected message with a base (like sodium carbonate solution) or an acid (like lemon juice). Equipment:

I’d probably give it a year in the market before I would buy it. But it does look really interesting,” said Medina, who is on the board of directors for the Alliance of Professional Tattooists. Looking further afield, some companies are already investing in technology embedded in the skin. A European company called DSruptive makes injectable thermometers. It said about 5,000 people — living primarily in Sweden, Japan, the U.S., and the United Kingdom — have had the devices installed. Ali Yetisen, an engineer at Imperial College London, said for companies eyeing tech embedded in the skin, diabetes is a big focus.

Talk Notes

For each of the solids, dissolve 5 g in 100 cm 3of deionised/distilled water. The lead nitrate solution should be labelledTOXIC. M iron sulfate IRRITANT, developed by 0.1 M sodium carbonate, 1% starch solution (e.g. corn starch or potato starch), or by 0.1 M iodine solution Potassium ferricyanide should not be present with Ammonia because an explosive mixture can be formed. It should also not be present where concentrated acid could be added because it would produce TOXIC gases.

A good way of recording this work is to get the pupils to write a story involving the ink they have used for their experiment. Curriculum range: Phenolphthalein (pH indicator) HIGHLY FLAMMABLE & HARMFUL, developed by sodium carbonate (Solid is IRRITANT – solution is LOW HAZARD) (or another base). Suggest not using. Ammonia gas is TOXIC. Ammonia concentrate is CORROSIVE & DANGEROUS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. This would need a very well ventilated room and student behaviour assessment also CLEAPSS advises a maximum of 2M for Year 7.

reporting on findings from enquiries and observations, including oral and written explanations, displays or presentations of results and conclusions; Originally from Loveland, Dr. Carson Bruns wears several hats, including the role of an assistant professor of mechanical engineering with the ATLAS Institute at CU Boulder. He is also the co-founder, president and chief scientific officer of HYPRSKN, a company that licenses technology from the college. It has a brand called Magic Ink, a project Bruns has been working on since joining the staff at the school. Transfer the solutions of iron(III) nitrate, lead(II) nitrate and aqueous ammonia into separate spray bottles. Adjust the nozzles of the bottles so that they deliver a fine mist, and spray several times to ensure that the spray contains the solution and not the water remaining from washing out the bottle.

Taken at an entertainment level there is plenty to interest an audience and there is wide variety of chemical reactions taking place. This demonstration would be a good introduction or finale to a general lecture demonstration on chemistry, or for an open day presentation. Some inks glow faintly or fluoresce when under an ultra-violet lamp. This is a property of many substances, particularly organic substances and body fluids. Using my scientific knowledge to explain how changing the conditions the inks are under affects their visibility.

These are best used with secondary students and most could be used comfortably with lower secondary students. Many of them work as pH indicators, so paint or spray a suspected message with a base (eg sodium carbonate solution) or an acid (e.g. lemon juice). Some of these inks will also reveal their message when heated (e.g. vinegar). The substances in milk weaken the paper and may be more susceptible to heat than the paper, so although the message dries clear, the paper weakens and darkens where the milk was applied. Equipment: And there you have it. It doesn’t matter what, if any, faith you have. It doesn’t matter if you’re of a pagan/magic persuasion, or looking for new arts and crafts ideas. Making homemade inks and oils is satisfying work in itself… and can leader to even greater work further down the line. A large number of alternative colour reactions can be used as the basis for ‘magic’ writing. It is suggested that these are tried out first, especially where mixtures are involved. Try this similar experiment Ultra-violet light can be harmful to eyes so pupils should be supervised when handling the lamp or they can observe as an adult uses the lamp. Portable counterfeit money detectors can be used for this and are easily sourced and reasonably priced.
