About this deal

When whalers left the coast of Whitby, the local fishermen became acquired to the taste of Jenever, a spirit introduced to them by the Dutch specialists to keep them warm out at sea. With the gin prohibition in full swing on land, the Whitby fishermen smuggled the ingredients ashore to keep the spirit alive, and now Whitby Distillery are bringing us our very own Jenever. It’s been 37℃ this week so this went down like pop. I finished it with lemon but I do think even harsher pink grapefruit would have been great. Like this a lot!

After William Slingsby discovered the unique properties of the water held in the Tewit Well, he had a vision that was a little different – Slingsby sought to bottle the beauty and restorative nature of Harrogate. Containing only pure, natural, hand-grown local plants which seek to compliment the water, the spirit is expertly brought together in a 100-year- old copper still and is hand-finished in North Yorkshire. Ok not quite a spirit but an inspired mix which makes this tipple suitable at pretty much any time of day. And it's worth a mention as it has such a good story behind it. They say:“The initial fresh citrus flavours evolve into unexpected ripe cantaloupe melon, the spicy fragrant juniper continues to coat the palate. There is a luscious sweet mouthfeel, which is both juicy and quenching.” Drawing its inspiration from ancient history and tradition, Hadrian’s Wall Gin is handcrafted in Northumberland. Infused with traditional Roman herbs and botanicals including coriander – they use a variation of seeds synonymous with Roman life during the occupation of the wall. As well as chamomile, a botanical vital in providing sweet undertones, there are floral notes, and mint which contributes to its oriental flavour. When all of the botanicals come together, they provide a truly fragrant finish.WC’s Gin Closet was first imagined in 2018, after the building had sat vacant for a decade due to closures of public conveniences across the city - so we decided to put another historic Georgian building to good use, creating a home for Gin lovers of all varieties! They say: “A nice warm savoury combination of pink peppercorns and celery seed rounded by a mix of traditional gin flavours like angelica and coriander, with late hints of cardamom. Immerse yourself in the cosy ambiance of W.C Gin Closet, designed to provide a respite from the bustling city outside. Whether you're seeking a quiet evening with friends or a romantic date night, our intimate space is the ideal setting.

Add 50ml Rhubarb and Rosehip Gin Liqueur, 20ml lemon juice, 10ml grenadine and 25ml cloudy apple juice to a shaker and dry shake without ice. Add ice to shaker and re-shake. Single strain into a glass filled with ice and garnish with an apple disc. From seasonal gins to limited-edition vodkas, the North East is quietly going about the business of producing a range of spirits that rival the very best. Founded in 1914, the company started out with a uniquely blended 'legendary dark rum', said to be a favourite amongst sailors and fisherman in the North East. It was taken over by the Harry Hotspur Holdings group in 2013 and business now takes in a full range of rums and liqueurs. There's now also a Lindisfarne Gin and a resurrected 1950s Glen Aln Whisky. Cooper King Distillery offers sustainable spirits that are created from a distillery that is 100% powered by green energy. Founded by Abbie and Chris in 2014, they distil the best gin and whisky that are crafted to perfection. Using local botanicals as their main ingredients, they ensure to create exceptional and flavoursome spirits that offer freshness and full rich flavour. Fill a glass with lots of chunky ice and add 50ml of Whitby Gin. Pair with 150ml of Mediterranean Fever-Tree tonic and garnish with pink grapefruit and a sprig of rosemary. We tend to know our beers, and are proud of our range of top local breweries, but what about other boozy treats? We have the region's only winery - Laneberg Wine in Gateshead - which is a hidden treasure in Team Valley where it takes English grapes and then crushes, processes and bottles at its Team Valley plant to produce award-winning wonders. Rare Bird Distillery is a Mediterranean inspired distillery that produces high-quality artisan spirits. Designing and creating their own 300-litre copper still that helps distil the finest gin that they have, they also use 11 different botanicals that when blended together will create the finest concoction. They use green pepper, hibiscus, rosemary, citrus, lemon, orange and grapefruit. As an ancient city, York almost has it all, but five local friends are now providing the magic ingredient it’s been missing – a gin of its very own. After hatching their plan in the pub, they managed to move past the drawing-board stage to launch York Gin Company in summer 2017, and a distillery fully-equipped with a 300-litre copper still named Ebor, the shortened form of Eboracum, the Roman name for York. We might be some time off being able to sample the Northumbrian Single Malt from what is to be Northumberland's first commercial whisky distillery but it surely will be worth the wait.

An excellent experience, Chris was the perfect guide and with his Mum’s help, they were the perfect hosts after the tour. A very comfortable atmosphere to try the different gins and to buy a bottle to take away.” – Geoff Everett Rare Bird Distillery The Whitley Bay-themed tipple boasts the holy trinity of flavours that make for a delicious gin in my opinion: juniper, warming je ne said quoi spice and citrus. Mostly citrus for me, definitely pink grapefruit, it is peppery with juniper and coriander. Bittersweet and a not too hot alcohol finish. Great tonic always helps of course, this Lixir was ideal. The gin company, founded by Harry Vaulkhard in 2013, has its home at city bar-restaurant Bealim House where the gin distillery is described as Newcastle's first: "the city’s only working in-house gin still" says the pub which also hosts tasting events.

The Lakes Distillery created a world-class distillery ‘from scratch’ within a National Park – making what may seem like the impossible, possible. To produce spirits in the most environmentally-friendly way possible, they have adopted a distilling process with no waste and, wherever possible, they recycle water and heat. Created by a group of like-minded individuals in search of a gin more superior, more flavoursome and more satisfying than the massproduced gins lining the aisles of supermarkets. Their desire; to be recognised for creating a local produce, for a local community and delivering a high-quality product to a consumer that demands the best ingredients and flavours. Another small family business, producing great gin. This time specialising in a particular kind – gin infused with sloes and other hedgerow fruits. At Green Farm, they were proactive in maintaining the habitats of local wildlife and would allow fruit to develop as a source of food for birds and small mammals, before long, large amounts of fruits began to appear. And so, the idea of gin infused with the hedgerow fruits formed – and sloemotion was born.

This independent Durham based distillery, which produces hand-crafted premium spirits with a focus on small-batch gins and nature at its heart, was founded by Sunderland-born Scott Wilson-Laing in 2019 with crowdfunding help and success rapidly followed, with the debut 1st Edition gin an award-winning hit. From a summery strawberries and cream-flavour Picnic Gin to a winter-warmer Fireside Gin, the pioneers are forever experimenting beyond their core range of Northern Dry Gin (43.2%) and Old Tom Gin - plus there's a Graceful Vodka too - which are all produced in a 500-litre still called Gracie. And the team cleverly keep people interested with limited-time-only, one-batch newcomers - such as Cherry and Basil - alongside its one-off range, The Rarities. Keep up to speed here with what's on offer.
