I’m certainly going to buy the actual book and keeping on the art, craft and hobbies section of the bookshelf. A paper art book I recommended for any family who loves to create paper art, crafts and hobbies or families who wish to begin a new way to create paper art and interact and communicate in togetherness. I'm here because I like origami, quilling, and having fun with paper. I'm also slow to actually make things, so I haven't gotten around to creating any of the projects here - an issue which might be fixed in the future. Paper artist and teacher, Helen Hiebert compiles a one-of-kind collection of 40 unique projects, each using just one sheet of paper. Combining decorative paper techniques like marbling, stamping, and stenciling, with dimensional techniques like origami, cutting, folding, quilling, stretching, weaving, and pop-ups, The Art of Papercraft offers a rich variety of projects that will delight crafters, artists, and designers alike. What can I say about this book? I loved it! I have been doing papercrafts since 2006. Quilling is my favorite and there are not that many sources outside of the quilling world. When I saw this book, I knew it was for me. I was excited to see origami in the book too since I have always wanted to learn but had been intimidated. The step-by-step instructions made it so easy that I cannot believe it took me this long to learn it. I was blown away by the reconstructed Bauhaus Exercise. It is delicate and detailed but with the instructions, anyone that can use a craft knife can do it.Included at the rear of the book are twenty-one templates that are used in a variety of the above projects, be it for a one-sheet tree, pop-up dragonfly, or the alphabet. As someone who has loved paper, loved the look, feel and smell of paper since shopping for school supplies before the next new school year in grade school, I love reading books about the uses of paper. This book is one of many I have perused for ideas on how to manipulate paper in new and imaginative ways. this book told me about paper types that I’ve never heard of before. I was searching the internet for different suppliers, looking for various types. The projects are quite varied, from decorative origami pieces, to a kite, to the wearable cuff. Some are simple, and could be done with children with supervision probably, and some more sophisticated in nature, and good jump off points for mixed media projects. I quite like the pleated lantern, and have done some things myself with sewn paper in the past. The quilled snowflake is lovely and something I am seriously considering making myself soon. I also like the slice form heart project. I have admired many other slice form pieces I have seen before, but have not tried it myself, so this is tempting.

The construction chapter is where it gets more involved with the adding of adhesives, embroidery, electronics, and more. There are twenty-two projects in this section, again with photographic and written instructions. I think it would have been nice to see a few projects or suggestions for trying out various paper decorating techniques. I enjoyed perusing through her ideas, carefully looking at the photographs and directions. Some I’ve tried before, some don’t interest me, but some I am excited to try. Artistry is about possibility and this book is full of possibility. From the introduction: “Helen Hiebert is a seasoned author artist, papermaker, and teacher who has created a comprehensive exploration of paper arts in The Art of Papercraft. This book will prove to be an excellent resource for teachers and students alike… All of the projects are fun one-sheet wonders that introduce essential cutting, folding and assembly techniques. Each project is simple enough for beginners while being sufficiently sophisticated for the seasoned crafter.” I've engaged in papercrafts my whole life and have tried most of the techniques described, but even so there were a few new ones for me (eg studs, fasteners and eyelets). I skimmed through some parts and examined others in detail. The section on bendable paper using wire supports was very interesting, and who can't resist pop-ups and origami? Sample project! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Storey Publishing via NetGalley for my honest review of the book Art of Papercraft Unique One-Sheet Projects Using Origami, Weaving, Quilling, Pop-Up, and Other Inventive Techniques by Helen Hiebert. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own thoughts, feelings and viewpoints of the book. What I received was an introduction to such an extraordinary world, from a very passionate author.. So I call it a great success! First, I would like to extend thanks to Net Galley and Storey Publishibng for providing this book without charge in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This book was a nice surprise! Paper is one of my “life loves”. I love the feel of paper texture and I’m always on the lookout for unique paper types, especially when using paper for cards for special people in my life. I loved severa things about this book: Created by various designers, the one-sheet projects shown in the book are broadly categorised under folding, cutting and construction. Each project is visually explained with step-by-step illustrations and includes materials and tools required.

All Things Paper

Paper is a magical and diverse material… . Paper can be both a surface (used in practical and artistic ways) and a work of art in and of itself." Fascinating, informative, and inspiring – this book reminded me of a trip with my father to watch master papermakers demonstrate how they made paper. It also reminded me of my children’s science classes in school when paper was one of their projects. It also reminded me of pop-up books my mother bought and that I later made for my granddaughters. I learned information I had not heard before and would love to have this book in my library. There are several little sidebars featuring tidbits and pictures of the works of various other artists which are quite lovely and inspirational too.

Would you like to learn a bit more about papercrafting besides just "cut here" and "fold there"? This is the book for you! Note: you'll also learn where to cut and fold, but you get the idea lol! There are lots of fun projects interspersed with profiles of paper artists featured in the book. The projects take the reader through a variety of techniques and skill levels, and the instructions are clear and well-photographed, making it easy to learn and improve one's skills. There's a visual guide section discussing ways to make your own paper, how to decorate paper, and fastening/connection methods. The last methods mentioned are shown in the book, but I understand not showing all the papermaking and decorating techniques, as the author does have a separate book on that. Hiebert includes a nice chonky resources list of suppliers, books, and where to find more on the artists featured in the book, and all the templates for the projects. While I think this is a fine book for beginners, to me it feels most suitable to those who've had some experience with papercrafting and want to learn more. I'd say this is a book anyone interested in papercraft should have on their shelf. Maybe I like these children’s art books because my grandchildren are perfect for discovering the art world. Or, it could be that I am a perpetual child who loves the elementary joy of creating art with pencil and paper. Whichever it is, this time-munching book is the perfect anecdote to a miserably hot afternoon that keeps our inner artists cooped up in an air-conditioned room. I have to admit, Hiebert’s ability to create the colorful world of art with paper amazes me. It’s like viewing a watercolor painting on a piece of paper or an intricate modern art sculpture you could squash with two hands. Even if you are not a paper nut, which I am not, this book is worth considering. Sometimes, we all need a new passion, right? As a child I recall going to a paper mill in the Cheddar Gorge area and seeing how the fibres come together, so knew this book 'The Art of Papercraft' would be interesting to review.I am impressed by the organization and clear instructions in The Art of Papercraft. The end of the book has a dictionary of terms, bibliography and extensive list of resources as well as templates for projects. The Art of Papercraft will inspire crafters, dabblers, and paper afficionados of all ages.
