About this deal

Available in mild or stainless steel, Tong potato washers are manufactured with a heavy-duty stainless steel barrel and discharge elevator as standard and can be fitted with a wide range of optional extras for superior potato washing. Manufactured in barrel lengths ranging from 1.2m – 5m, the Tong potato washer can be specified as a stand-alone washing machine, or integrated into new or existing potato washing lines. For early potatoes it is recommended that you start the growing process in the barrel for 2 to 3 weeks in a greenhouse or shed. Cover the stones with about 12.5cm (5in) of well rotted compost mixed with a good general fertiliser. Repeat this process in layers of about 4 inches (100mm) until the compost and the shoots reach 1 Inch (25mm) below the top of the barrel.

When the plants started to grow above the soil mix I added the weekly feed to the top and watered it in. It measures 60cm in height and is 43cm in diameter and will hold up to 80 litres of compost. Where to Place your Potato Barrel?

Plants are just like humans and we don’t take more vitamins than what the label says, so please don’t over fertilize thinking your plants will be more healthier. Barrels designed specifically for growing potatoes are available; these often have access holes in the sides, near the base, which can be opened to extract the potatoes when the crop is ready. Alternatively, any sort of bin or barrel can be used although make sure that you know what was originally stored in the barrel, avoid bins/barrels which had chemicals etc. unless you are very certain that any residue will be harmless. Ideally the bin/barrel should be about 1.2m (4ft) high although smaller containers (such as plastic dustbins) will suffice but the yield will be limited. Depending on the size of your container place two or three seed potatoes, spaced out equally and about 6 inches (15cm) in from the edge of the container.

Make sure to only use the bright orange zest and not the bitter white pith. If you plant up several different bags in succession, moving them into a cool greenhouse before the first frost, you can harvest your potatoes for most of the year. In fact you can even have your own Christmas potatoes. Keep the barrel well watered (but not waterlogged), especially in sunny weather. Include in each watering some proprietary tomato feed or similar. When it comes to selecting the ideal barrel for growing potatoes, you want one that promotes proper drainage and aeration.
