About this deal

The price of any additional compulsory component (e.g. electrostatic energisers) will be added to this MSRP value and valued accordingly. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. The Shure SRH840 is more expensive, and offers a more linear and extended sound, especially in the bass and lower midrange. A planar that comes unnervingly close estat speed, but not quite. Solid technicalities with excellent tone. Personally, I love the design of the Shure SRH-440's they are not designed in any way to be fashion headphones. Rather the 440s are designed for their purpose and that is as a studio or home monitor. There is nothing too flashy about them, more so they are quite utilitarian in the looks department but one thing you do notice right away is they look classy.

Surprisingly competent for a decades-old set. Midrange is a little uneven but beats out many other modern TOTLs. These headphones are actually pretty tight gripping on my (seemingly) normal sized head. I like that A LOT, but I'm sure it bothers the hell of some people. I've heard people calling them loose, but they aren't to me.

Without doubt, these are the best of the bunch. Perceived dynamic range is unbelievably wide. These are in a different league in terms of clarity as well---perhaps, the KNS 6400 is close but also with weaknesses (see above). Treble is sometimes a little on the bright side, but not as bright as the KNS6400's. Some people may find them bright with bright recordings, but the headphones should not be blamed for that. These produce very neutral and accurate sound. Bass is sufficient and often pleasantly strong in the mid- and upper bass regions, but deeper bass is not covered by these cans. Most music recordings do not contain this deep bass, anyway. Consider this headset if: you want headphones with a clear and clean tonal balance with good rendition of detail—even if that comes at the expense of somewhat light or bright sound. My DIY speaker system (it measures very flat) served as a reference with respect to tonal balance. I also own some open headphones like Sony MDR-MA900 and Sennheiser PX100, which also provided a baseline when I evaluated tonal balance of the headphones under comparison. I used a desktop headphone amp that has flat FR and reasonably low output impedance. Extremely uneven tuning, mediocre resolution, not a great choice unless you only want a wide soundstage. Solid tuning with a little treble spiciness for the daring. One of the better midrange planars out there. The SRH440 headphones are suited for use both at home or in the studio. Impedance, power handling and sensitivity are all calibrated for professional audio devices such as DJ mixers, mixing consoles and headphone amplifiers._ I know it may seem that I am a little down on the Shure SRH-440 headphones when it comes to sound quality, this couldn't be further from the truth. The sound quality is excellent it’s just that to me it is excellent in what I would want in a studio monitor headphone as opposed to a highly engaging listening device. In day-to-day use as my sole recreational daily driver, I could see myself easily demanding more from the Shure headphone when I just want to enjoy my tunes.

Needs a little more upper midrange to balance out the honkiness. Good dynamic performance especially in the bass. In fact, the 440 easily made my best studio headphones for mixing, mastering, and music production list and still remains a top recommendation in that category even despite some of the issues we discussed earlier. Build quality, as is again common with Shure, is excellent. The headphones are mainly constructed from plastic but it is of very high quality. Overall the headphones have a very sturdy feel to them and you get the impression they can take years of daily abuse just as a studio monitor should. It isn’t obvious that the 840s give up anything, but of course the tonal balance of the 440s does tend to keep the focus on the midrange and lower treble. Anothter pair of headphones with bass emphasis. Not overly bassy, though. But a bigger problem is treble, which is a little too polite to be neutral. I would not consider these headphones a good value.

I think the 440 is runner-up simply due to its build and comfort, but honestly, this could just be a case of flipping a coin. Moving into the treble, it also stands out here, but not in a way that feels overly sibilant or bright. The mid-range can sound a bit forward with certain recordings, but I think it mostly knows its place in the mix. Great, I’m not telling you to. My work on measurements is separate from my reviewing work. It takes me 5 minutes to measure a headphone, you honestly think I don’t have time to listen to it as well? ↓↓↓ READ THIS: Notes & Disclaimers ↓↓↓ The Grados have a mid-range emphasis as compared to a mid-treble emphasis on the Shures, which means the Grados sound richer but perhaps not as lively (though the Grados will never be accused of sounding dead). As a gaming headphone, possibly the best technically though with the usual pitfalls of the Audeze house sound. This was one of my sister’s main concerns when I asked for her impressions over the last few years. Shure have been leaders in the audio technology industry for over ninety years and they are famous for their commitment to strong, high quality, durable audio equipment and this undoubtedly extends to their SRH440 professional headphones. Featuring the strong, durable build you expect from Shure, the SRH440s also have a detachable cable and replaceable earpads so if you should need to you can easily replace these components without having to replace the entire set of headphones. The padded headband and ear cups of the SRH440 provide comfort suitable for hours of uninterrupted use._
