About this deal

As of 2014, Thai people, numbering 120, were the second largest group of residents after Norwegians; [30] there were 60 in 2006. Thais first came to Svalbard when men brought their wives from Thailand during the 1970s. [31] In 2006, most of the Thai residents worked as cleaners, [31] and as of 2011 most stay for terms of two to three years to save funds. [ citation needed] In 2007, 10 students at the Longyearbyen School were Thai. [32] The Thai community is active in numerous cultural events annually and motivated the establishment of a Thai supermarket. [30] This flag is relatively modern and it is not easy to determine what the earliest design of the flag of Norway was under various rulers. Some ancient Norwegian flag designs, however, are known. For example, Saint Olav's flag contained a colored serpent within a white mark which was flown at the Battle of Nesjar. A raven or dragon was a popular symbol prior to that time. Magnus the Good also used a serpent, while the raven was flown by Harald Hardråde and other Vikings and rulers from the 9th to the 11th century AD. Around 1280, the Norwegian Eirik Magnusson flew a flag containing a golden lion with ax and crown on red, which turned into today's royal Norwegian flag with the lion. Norway's flag colors are based on the French flag. The current flag design was introduced in 1821 when Norway was no longer ruled by Denmark. It later became the officially recognized flag of Norway. The design is based on the Nordic cross and reflected the tradition established by Sweden and Denmark, two neighboring Nordic countries.

The group of islands range from 74° to 81° north latitude, and from 10° to 35° east longitude. [1] [2] The area is 61,022 square kilometres (23,561sqmi) and there were 2,572 residents in 2009. Spitsbergen is the largest island, followed by Nordaustlandet and Edgeøya. This made Longyearbyen the second-largest research outpost on Svalbard, marginally below Ny-Ålesund. In contrast, Longyearbyen has almost only Norwegian research, while Ny-Ålesund is roughly evenly split between Norwegian and foreign. The small Arctic town is inhabited by nature enthusiasts who live in close unity under tough climatic conditions with the High Arctic wilderness right on their doorstep. Longyearbyen is the gateway to the nature-based experiences and the starting point for most adventures in Svalbard. This Arctic wilderness starts virtually in the town centre and never ends!Svalbardi literally means “the land with the cold shores”.
