Two of the fruit boxes served as speaker stands and places to store some LPs and clothes; the third held my bed light and school books. Compact and stylish but with the class-leading sound quality you’d expect from Triangle, the Triangle LN01A are premium active speakers. As an old-school amp/speaker kind of guy, it took me a while to warm up to active loudspeakers in the hi-fi space. I had doubts about whether they would be effective at reproducing music in a way that would satisfy audiophiles. But advances in technology, primarily with digital amplification, have paved the way for simple all-in-one or just add source audio solutions that actually sound good. A close squiz reveals it has a high standard of finish and that it will play 33 and 45 rpm records. Although Triangle Electroacoustique can point to years of expertise in the development of loudspeaker systems, for a long time the company was dedicated to the designated premium segment and thus was probably not as well known to a broader customer base as some other manufacturers. Newbies can also link their smartphones to the Elara’s built-in Bluetooth receiver within moments, and allow its codec circuitry to start streaming music from an Android or Apple device. Triangle supplies a remote control but provides a volume knob on the rear of the right speaker. This knob also works as an input selector switch but one that must be pressed to move through the inputs. Moving 500 miles south, I streamed the third version of the titular composition on Marseille, by Ahmad Jamal (24/96 FLAC, Jazz Village/Qobuz), which features the French singer-songwriter Mina Agossi. The Triangles reproduced Agossi’s languid soprano with no hint of coloration or spittiness. When she sings in French, I could clearly appreciate her Gallic consonants, such as the rolled r’s and extended s’s in such words as caresse and tristesse.

Ultimately, the Triangles are in good shape to satisfy anyone looking for a convenient, space-saving system solution that plays ball with almost any source. The Elara is said to have a power output of 50-watts and a frequency response of 56-20,000 Hz measured at one metre +/-3dB. The new Triangle AIO TWIN speakers offer full flexibility as soon as they are integrated into the network, which can be done either via cable or the integrated WiFi module according to IEEE 802.11n.As my wife remarked, these little speakers have plenty of soul saying: “They appeal to the heart and not the head.’’ They’d be a cinch to transport. And the features on offer such as an inbuilt phono stage and Bluetooth connectivity, it’s light years ahead of those on my Garrard/Armstrong/Goodman’s audio system. The fabric Bond is used, which looks particularly elegant, is very durable and will be a real feast for the eyes for years to come. No matter how rose coloured my audio memories, sound-wise the Triangle gear stomps all over what I used to begin my audio journey.
