About this deal

The Cosmic Down 20 uses a 50D polyester taffeta liner and a 20D down-proof polyester ripstop shell*, both of which are fairly standard for sleeping bags in their price range and performance range. Mummy sleeping bags trim away material in the shoulders, hips, and feet for a shape that mimics your body. The advantage of having a tapered cut is there is little extra space for cold spots to creep in. And with a quality hood cinched around the top of your head, you can really maximize the temperature rating potential. If you find yourself at higher elevations or in colder temperatures, a mummy bag is a great option. Rectangular bags have the clear edge in roominess I've only given it 4 stars for the moment because I haven't truly tested the performance of it quite yet and plan on updating this review with further thoughts once I use it properly. What we like: A super comfortable and fully featured option for two campers; temperature rating feels generous. What we like: A budget design that’s a step up in build quality from the Coleman and Teton Sports bags above.

They’re also soft and comfortable, thanks to a 20-denier taffeta nylon shell and lining. You get a cosy hood and a ‘natural fit’ footbox to give your toes a bit more wiggle room. In addition, features like a zipper draught tube with an anti-snag zipper design and a lofty draught collar help to keep things extra toasty. Those are design elements usually only found in much higher-priced bags. Now, I dont come across many perfect things in my life and this is not one of them. It has some slight, VERY slight issues that MAY bother others: the zipper tends to be a little annoying when zipped down all the way, it's a little annoying (not hard) to get it zipping again, but once it's started it's great (simple solution: just don't unzip it ALL THE WAY... problem solved). Second thing that may bother someone (this is also my first mummy style bag so I'm not sure if most are like this) is that the hood doesn't cinch tight around your face unless you have a giant head (could be a perfect fit for my girlfriend) HOWEVER, this is far from a deal breaker. Hoodless Sleeping Bags: Hoodless sleeping bags or quilts are more commonly an option for summer hikes, but those who feel overly restricted by a mummy-style bag with a tight hood might prefer to use a hoodless sleeping bag and sleep with a hat on to keep their dome and ears toasty throughout the night. While this may seem like nothing to write home about, it can make a big difference to a sleeping bag’s overall convenience and durability because this area around the zippers is notoriously prone to ripping when impatient users use excessive force to undo a snag and end up tearing through the delicate liner fabric with the zipper. The three main types of insulating fill in modern sleeping bags are down, water-resistant down, and synthetic insulation. Each of these fill types has its advantages and disadvantages, all of which we’ll cover belowUpdate: The Kelty Cosmic Down 20 is a staple, and doesn’t change that often. Kelty updated it in 2016, and the bag is not received a major revision in 2019. Kelty Cosmic Down 20 Video Review

Synthetic—Usually slightly heavier and less compressible than down fills but, in its favor, costs a lot less and can insulate even when damp or wet

Got all that? Great! Then let’s get down to business will our review of the Kelty Cosmic Down 20. Warmth For those interested in such things, Casey's calculation on loft can be a good starting point… However, for the numbers to be accurate that calculation assumes that the amount of down is going into the same-cut sleeping bag shell & that the shell fabric is the same weight. Given that the two bags compared have a difference of 3" in shoulder girth, and have different-weight shells, the actual "loft ratio," if we were to call it that, would be more in favor of the Western bag. The material used in your sleeping bag’s shell or outer layer is important for two reasons: protection and durability; and, resistance to dampness and condensation. 1) Protection and durability
