Designed to be used after shampoo and conditioner, this leave in spray will give similar results to Olaplex No 6 through its Granrepair Powerbond technology. Image: The INKEY List I have personally used this mask a lot and while there’s nothing to dislike about it, I get better results from lots of other cheaper hair masks. For me, Olaplex 8 did not leave my hair much softer than before, no more shiny and there was no wow factor. However, it is a decent mask and if you are actively working on repairing damaged hair this is a good choice. I use the shampoo and conditioner for every other hair wash – as it’s a reparative treatment, you don’t need to overdo it. I then switch between my No.3 and No.8 hair masks once a week, and I’m never without the No.7 Bonding Oil to protect my hair from heat damage.

Can I style my hair with Olaplex products?

Regularly referred to as an Olaplex Bonding Oil dupe, this little bottle of hair oil from DERMA-E has become a hit on TikTok. Image: Derma-E

Most people think about how Keratin (proteins) make up the hair, forming polypeptide bonds (long chains) that are kept in alignment by hydrogen, salt and disulfide bonds. Olaplex No. 5 Conditioner contains many very hydrating ingredients which enrich the hair, leave it healthier, and eliminate dryness. In addition, this product contains a high number of antioxidants, which can repair damage to the hair and protect it from environmental damage like pollution and UV rays. All hair contains millions of disulfide bonds which give the hair its structure, strength and stability. When all the bonds, especially the disulfide bonds, are intact and in alignment, you have healthy, beautiful, shiny, touchable hair. When disulfide bonds are broken, it results in damage. Their products help repair all types of chemical damage, like relaxing and keratin treatments, as well as perms and colouring. If you’ve managed to avoid the bleach but still have damage from heat styling, brushing or even environmental stressors, the Olaplex products are still suitable for you. Chemical services can also cause damage. These services include Color, Lighteners, Perms, Relaxers, Keratin Treatments, and Japanese Straighteners/Thermal Reconditioners. The No.0 treatment and No.3 mask are add-on treatments your hairdresser might suggest you use at home. ‘They give the user the ability to continue repairing their hair whenever they'd like', says Tom. However, those with very damaged hair report much better results from Elizavecca’s products than from Olaplex’s. The Collagen Coating Protein Treatment is an intensive mask that you leave on for up to 20 mins, and it will transform dry and damaged hair into soft, silky strands. You can have Olaplex done in a hair salon, and there are also Olaplex productsyou can buy to treat your hair at home. The secret behind OLAPLEX’s incredible success? The brand’s patented bond building technology and bond maintenance system. Working on a molecular level, the brand’s bond building innovation is the first of its kind, repairing strands’ broken disulphide bonds, caused by heat and colour damage. This active system works by repairing and realigning the torn disulphide links, rather than just increasing the density of the hair, like typical repair systems do. Kelly Macedo is a hairstylist and the owner of Interior Hair in Los Feliz, California. Her specialties include precision haircuts with a focus on bangs, face-framing bobs, pixie cuts, lived-in layers, and enhancing her clients’ natural textures.

Olaplex has an entire hair line that includes shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioners, hair masks, oils, and more. Though I've heard good things about all of Olaplex's products, I only use the No. 3, which is essentially a mask that you put on wet hair and then rinse out during your normal shower routine. Typically, my hair is pretty frizzy and the ends start to show signs of breakage after a couple of months. However, my hair definitely felt better for much longer with the Olaplex No. 3. Even after four or five months, it was feeling like I had just walked out of the salon. A study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology discovered that essential fatty acids and antioxidants lead to improvements in hair growth and density. What is it? The latest and greatest from Olaplex. This weightless, leave-in, silicone-free hair serum shields hair from pollution for 48 hours and provides heat protection up to 450°F. OLAPLEX was created by Dean Christal in his family’s Santa Barbara home garage. Coming from a family of hair experts, Christal worked with scientists to discover the brand’s signature ingredient – Bis-Aminopropyl-Diglycol Dimaleate – which transforms the quality of tresses’ textures, colour and overall strength. This home-grown idea has since evolved to become one of the biggest names in the hair and beauty business – now selling millions of products every year. It has been about 2 months now since I last used olaplex products and my scalp is still very itchy every single day and I still lose a lot of hair, much more then I ever used too!

The bond-repairing technology in these products comes from citric acid so they are quite similar in formula to Redken’s Acidic Bonding Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner. Image: L’OrealEditor's note: Olaplex came under fire in 2022 after customers claimed the product caused breakage and hair loss— and a lawsuit alleged that the company didn't disclose the fertility-related health risks linked to an ingredient in the product. Despite using "a trace amount of lilial" at a 0.01% concentration, which the company claims isn't a harmful amount, it has since been phased out of the formula. Fortunately there are a growing number of Olaplex dupes on the market, many of which are a much cheaper alternative to these sought after hair products.
